Frankenstorm (Hurricane Sandy) and travel to / within the US
« on: October 28, 2012, 07:49:56 AM »
We're flying into Philadelphia Wed afternoon and then on to Ft. Lauderdale from there.  My mom is freaking out about the storm and I see it could be very big indeed!  I guess all we can do is check with the airlines before we fly, etc.

I'm hoping by Wed it should have settled down as it's supposed to hit this weekend...

Is anyone flying in the next couple of days?  Travelling in or around the NE part of the US?

Yeah, I think all you can Andee is check with the airlines, etc - Though, because its out of your control, they should re-book your flights when they can.

Hopefully it doesn't mess you (or anyone else flying) up too bad and has all passed by the time you're on your way.

The storm is supposed to be moved out by Wednesday. They say Monday and Tuesday are the worst for Baltimore, so I imagine Philly is pretty much the same. You shouldn't have any problems getting to Florida, but definitely check with the airlines. Safe travels!

Hi Andee! My brother says be sure & keep checking with your airline throughout Tuesday - perhaps every 6 hours or so. As CCG says, storm predicted to make landfall Tues morn or so - however, they are also predicting the storm cell itself is looking to park itself over PA (the rain & wind) for awhile...

If storm goes as currently predicted, brother doubts there will be much/any flights going/landing in Philly on Tuesday. That will create backlogs as they try rerouting flights. And then a lot from there will depend on how long it hangs about in PA.

It may be that your Wed flight could be delayed or maybe rerouted away from Philly to elsewhere. So definitely stay in touch with airline - could affect how soon you need to be at airport, as they will be sure to keep your flight safe. Hope it goes smoothly for you.

We were booked to fly to Philly (US Air) on Monday the 29th.   When I looked at the web site Saturday night it said "Travel advisory in effect" .  I clicked on that and the advisory is Sunday through and including Wed the 31st.
US Air will change your reservation at no added charge when there is a travel advisory.  We were not advised by US Air of a cancellation because our flight is still listed as "active".

So we changed ours to Thurs, Nov 1st.  We were afraid that we might not get a seat if we waited too long.  Also I didn't want to be wondering about it for two whole days.

Good luck and safe travels.

Well, there's almost no point in changing our flight to a later date as we're only staying 5 nights, plus we've booked through a third party so we might not be able to.  Best case scenario is that we'll just fly in later than planned, arriving in Ft. Lauderdale after midnight or something rather than at 6:00 pm.  :-\\\\

It shouldn't matter that you booked through a third party as far as changing the flight. I do think the worst will have passed by Wednesday, but there is still supposed to be heavy rains and maybe flooding so while flights might be going in and out, expect things not to go smoothly. Good luck!

Hope you're OK aimless--I've seen footage of Manhattan underwater!!  But you're in Hoboken right?

Well so far flights for Wed have not been cancelled still, so keeping fingers crossed as we head to Manchester and MiL's today...

Hoboken always floods.

If Manhattan is as flooded as it is... you can be sure Hoboken is even worse.

Thanks! I'm in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, actually and it's all good here. Haven't even lost power. I'm at a friend's apartment about 20 blocks from my apartment so I haven't been home to see if my car and apartment are ok but I suspect they probably are. I live on the ground floor but at the top of a steep hill so I'm cautiously optimistic there isn't a lot of flooding. I'm also parked at the top of a hill and not directly under a tree, so ditto for my car. I'll head home later this afternoon, when the winds die down a little more.

The pictures I've seen of elsewhere in Brooklyn and in Manhattan, though, are crazy! Also, the subways are super flooded and clearly screwed up for quite awhile.
