Camping?
« on: October 28, 2012, 03:32:28 PM »
Curious how much of our camping gear to bring? Our boys are on scouts here and I imagine we will be there also... Tent & sleeping bags are easy, but what about propane powered lights/lamps & stoves? Is there anything else you would bring?

I think it depends on how much of your possessions you're bringing over and what the cost will be. If you're getting a container (or half a container), then bring it all! If it's going to cost you a lot to package and ship it all separately, then you might find it cheaper to buy once you're here.

Generally speaking, I find prices are better in the US as well as the selection. But I would check on what types of things are allowed to be shipped, as I know the airlines do not allow the pocket rocket back packer stove even in checked bags.

Being big campers in the States, I have to say the price for things here is really high compared to the US. I wish we had brought our things. That being said, I don't know if the fuel for certain things are the same here. We had a stove and lantern that took white fuel which we could easily get at any walmart...and I don't know where to get that here, but I'm sure you probably can, just not sure of the price. Camping is very popular here, just different.

Every tent we've bought here has been second-hand from eBay - second-hand, but only used once or twice, so virtually new. And they've all cost next to nothing! So I wouldn't get overly worried about prices.

In what ways do you find it different? Curious as I plan on doing camping once I'm there as we love to hike and backpack.

We got our tent cheap on ebay as well, used only once by the original owners.  We also sold a tent (hubby's old one person tent) easily on ebay.

I did some camping in the US (east coast) but can't remember how it was different than camping in the UK is.  I did camping in PA and in  Maine in the US and here in the UK we've camped in the Dales and the Lake District.

We sell our old ones on eBay too! Every year or so we upgrade to something bigger/nicer and get rid of the previous tent.

I'd be interested in that as well. I never camped in the US, but we camp here quite a bit. And the past couple of years we've gone over to France and camped there too.

I've only ever camped at festivals here, so its completely different from anything in the US (I think concerts at the Gorge in WA state is the only place like it) and its only been at small festivals (no more than 5,000 people - so nothing like what you see at Glastonbury/Reading, etc)

I've seen people mention that in the US you can pitch at tent anywhere you wish, while here they restrict you to camp sites or specific parts of parks/hiking/walking areas. Maybe thats what the poster meant?

I may have misunderstood you, but scouts use tents, gas stoves etc owned by the troop - so the kids don't need them or other stuff like stoves, gas lamps etc. On scout camps they would just need personal stuff like sleeping bag, rucksack, torch etc.

For personal camping I would imagine the US stuff is cheaper - but it's along time since I did any camping in the US.

Whoever said you can pitch a tent anywhere was just pulling your leg, cause that isn't true at all.  We have parks where you camp and the sites are marked and you have to stay on your site, etc.  but some places are more remote than others so in some primitive places it may seem like you're just pitching your tent any where.  :-)

Thanks for the responses! I was unsure of the propane canisters mostly. Not sure what to expect in so many areas of moving, lol. I think it will mostly depend on how much it will cost to bring things over:)

Oh you'll have plenty of places to hike and backback. What I find the biggest difference is privacy. We're used to setting up our tent in a site nestled under trees in the woods. MOST campgrounds here that I've seen are fields and there is NO privacy. Also...while you can find places that allow campfires, they seem to be the exception to the rule. Hubby and I would stay up for hours at night just sitting around the campfire with the kids talking. Here, once it got dark, we went inside the tent to talk...but we really missed the fire.
The tents...from what I have seen brand new, are very pricey (Not really ever tried ebay but I guess I should)...but they are nice. Many have a living area and are quite roomy.

When I said its different, I didn't mean different bad....just different. Hubby and I used to go every weekend (just about) in the States. We lived near the White Mountains in NH so we were spoiled. We'd go for long walks, come back, start a campfire, cook baked taters in the fire, throw a couple of steaks and mushrooms on the fire, crack open a bottle of wine and just sit in front of the fire watching the stars. We'd climb into the tent....get up in the morning and pack up and go home. Other times we'd stay for days with the kids.
Now I want to go camping  :(

We didn't go camping once this summer due to the wettest summer on record.  :(

There's a campsite in the dales that allows fires but it gets so crowded; you're right about the very little privacy thing.  Also, if you go at certain times (bank holidays, school holidays) it will be more crowded than other times.
