*I think UK Smarties are high up on my boak-tastic meter  ;) ;)

US Smarties sound pretty boak-tastic to me.

UK Smarties are lovely. But I do agree that I miss the delicious chemical colours and flavours!  :-X  When I was little, we used to lick the red ones and then rub the red all over our lips to make lipstick!

Smarties here are similar to M&Ms, right? I don't eat a whole bunch of candy. But, I have discovered Galaxy Minstrels. Mmmmm... They are like posh plain M&Ms.

I think they're similar, but not as good. However, DH prefers Smarties. I've recently discovered Galaxy Cookie Crumble. It's kind of a problem.  :P

My mom used (US) Smarties as a reward for potty training.  I loved them growing up.

Not quite the same because we have M&Ms too, but yeah, fairly similar (Smarties are made by Nestle, M&Ms by Mars). It probably just depends on personal taste as to which you prefer... I tend to only eat M&Ms when I'm in the US because there are are so many other chocolate bars/sweets here that I prefer :P.

Minstrels win hands-down over M&Ms and Smarties for me any day :P.

And they make you want to pee every time you eat them for some crazy reason? ;D

I agree! I haven't tried the UK smarties (they seem like faux m&ms!) and I really love US plain M&Ms. But Minstrels?? Oh man! I took a couple of bags home in Aug. when I went back for the wedding. I was trying to eat them slowly (over days), but I just couldn't help myself!

I've only found peanut M&Ms here. Where are the plain ones? They are really good added into (and baked in) chocolate chip cookies. :)

My husband loves regular Mountain Dew (NOT the energy stuff here) and tootsie rolls. I plan on taking him to a sweets shop in the States later on this month and introduce him to some of the older sweets that I grew up on. My parents were older when they had me, so I grew up with drastically different tastes than my peers. While I was deemed "strange" due to that while growing up, now that I'm in the UK I seem to fit in better due to it!

My husband (and I) also love Chick-fil-a. Certain things there are gluten free so I can enjoy them. I can have pure wheat, but not barley it seems...

I can still remember when we went out for Mexican for the first time and the Mr couldn't believe how large the glasses were (~20 fl oz) and how he could get free refills!

I'll definitely be stocking up on the smarties when we go back, along with the tootsie rolls and maybe a few other things. I might even be able to pick up a few Christmas presents while I'm over there! Win-win!  ;D

Sorry!  :P I haven't even looked to see if we can get chocolate chips here easily! lol I usually do the break and bake ones (they have ones with mini m&ms, too!) because I am lazy and suck at baking. I'm too impatient!

Perhaps, although UK Smarties have been around longer than M&Ms, so maybe it's that M&Ms are the faux-Smarties :P. (Smarties were developed in 1937, M&Ms in 1941).

I've only found peanut M&Ms here. Where are the plain ones? They are really good added into (and baked in) chocolate chip cookies. :)

That's weird - I always seem to see plain M&Ms here and hardly ever notice the peanut ones (I haven't eaten peanut M&Ms in years) :P.

You should be able to get the plain ones at newsagents or supermarkets. They usually have the larger bags of plain M&Ms near the sharing-size bags of Minstrels in supermarkets, in the confectionery aisle.

We went to Morrison's the other night and no plain! Only peanut ones. I haven't seen them at Sainsburys either. I'll try again...

Sorry!  :P I haven't even looked to see if we can get chocolate chips here easily! lol I usually do the break and bake ones (they have ones with mini m&ms, too!) because I am lazy and suck at baking. I'm too impatient!

You can get chocolate chips easily (Morrisons here sells them for 80p for I believe a 100g pack), but I've just been taking a knife to the 30p bars of chocolate and having chocolate chunk cookies instead.

If you're impatient, I have a wonderful recipe for you. You can add any type of add ins you want, they freeze well and bake up wonderfully.

Refrigerator Cookies
(this was originally a GF recipe, but they work with plain flour as well)
225g plain flour
1 tsp (5 ml) baking powder
100g butter
175g caster sugar (granulated works as well)
1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract/flavouring
1 beaten egg

Mix flour and baking powder in a bowl. Rub in the butter. Squish it between your fingers in the flour, it's actually quite fun in my opinion. Add the sugar and mix. Add the vanilla and egg and mix into a dough. Here is where you can add chocolate, nuts, dried fruits, etc. if you want.

Bake at 190C/375F/gas mark 5 for 10-12 minutes. If baking from frozen, you may need to add an extra minute or two. Let them cool a bit on the tray before trying to get them off, or bake them on the tray with parchment paper/greaseproof paper. The paper makes it so much easier to transfer them off the pan!

The original recipe says to shape into a long roll about 5 cm diameter and wrap, then refrigerate overnight. I end up just rolling little balls of the dough and baking some, then freezing the rest of the cookie balls on a cookie sheet. Once they're frozen, toss them into a bag or container and then you can just pull out as many as you need (or want) and bake away without waiting. That is, *if* you can resist eating the frozen dough like I always end up doing...

LOL

My husband loves ....tootsie rolls.

I love Tootsie Rolls too and I've got some of my work mates hooked after bringing home some in the past. I recently found one of my local shops sells them, along with other American things like Butterfingers, Marshmallow Fluff and Nerds. More and more American treats are making their ways into the most random of places. I understand there are quite a few American goodie shops in the Leeds area now.
