Settling in Canada instead of US??
« on: October 05, 2004, 11:56:41 AM »
Hiya.  I was wondering if anyone out there had any experience of applying to Canada for immigration?  My Brit hubby and I (american) are looking into the option because we he is not elibible for a US visa (for a number of political reasons related specifically to the US).  We both really love Canada and have been looking at the skilled worker programme.  I was just wondering if anyone had any experience on the matter.

THanks!
Kat

I second that advice from Marles, though you might find the information there slightly skewed as most of the couples will be US / Canadian couples not US / UK Couples. If you decide to go to Canada you will both have to have visas to live and settle there. I think Canada is part of the commonwealth so there might be some specific rules and regs for Brits wishing to move there. Your best bet though is to contact the Canadian Embassy in the UK and look at their website : http://www.canada.org.uk/. They'll be able to provide you with all the immigration information you need. Good luck!

I don't have any practical advice, but according to the few people I know who have emigrated to Canada, things work very slowly there and you will need to get moving ASAP.  A Canadian friend of mine and his American fiancee had to wait about a year before they were able to marry because the government kept losing the forms they sent in, and an Irish girl I know had to wait more than a year before getting her visa even though she already had a job lined up in Canada!  This may not be the typical story over there, but I thought I'd share what I've heard from other people.

Thanks for this...It does seem to take ages for immigration to Canada.  Why can't matters be easier for multi-national couples  ??? Thanks again!!
