Can someone answer these questions for me?
« on: November 08, 2012, 01:20:40 PM »
I have a few questions that I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on via my best friend, Google. I'm going to be going to a community college next year and I've been doing a LOT of soul searching lately and trying to figure out what I really want to do. Originally I did want to become a Speech Pathologist, but after thinking about it for a few weeks I've changed my mind.

I've already been interested in Computer 3D Animation for a long time and everyone has always told me I should get involved in something creative, something artistic because I have a huge artistic background. However, I always shut the thought down from anyone that mentioned it because I just thought there is no realistic way I can make a lot of money that way. Now I'm really thinking about my life, the only one I'll ever have, I don't want to solely focus on getting a massive amount of money in exchange for being rather miserable/not real happy with my career.

So, I looked into my college and they have a Fine Arts program that will prepare you for careers in Animation, it is for two years and you can chose to go on to a four year school. Now, my boyfriend and I want to get married soon, and as soon as he has a better paying job the plan is to get me over there to be with him. I know that him searching for a better job, and actually getting one that pays 18,600 pounds can take a lot of time, but I was thinking, if he finds one, what if I'm in college at the time? (Yes, I know college and uni are different things in the UK. But I'm talking about university)

Or what if after just finishing my two years of schooling, we finally qualify for a visa where I can make the move, would a Fine Arts Degree transfer over there? Would the degree I earned be worthless to get into a four year school in the UK? Or would I need to start all over again? Same as if I graduate from a four year school, would that transfer over? Should I be contacting the school and asking them? Because this is seriously something I worry about..  I was talking to my teacher and he's putting a massive amount of pressure on me to learn faster then I am (even though I study at home a lot and I'm really trying my hardest) saying that I'm getting too old (I'll be 21 this month) and that after I hit a certain age universities will not be as interested in me. Said that in front of the whole class, which was some nice humiliation. This whole situation is just a massive stress on me.  :\\\'(

I can't answer a lot of this, but I can say that as to what your teacher has told you, it's a load of crap. People go back to university at all ages. There are even specific provisions put in place at most universities for people who are older. They're called mature students. This is in both the US and the UK. It doesn't matter how old you are. Universities care about your work, not your age. Don't give that ridiculous (and completely unprofessional) comment another thought.

You sound like you're working very hard, and you should be proud of yourself!  :) Good luck, MandyBoo!

Well thank you very much anyway. That makes me feel a bit better, I just couldn't believe he humiliated me in front of the whole class like that, really thought I was going to break down but I held it together! No matter, I'll just use that as fuel to get better and finally get out of his class. I was just scared what he was saying had some truth to it and that universities would care what age I am. Thank you very much, I really am doing the best I can! :)

That teacher is unprofessional and an a$$.  Ignore him.  No one is ever too old for education, and universities will not care about your age.

Indeed. The only thing I could see age playing a factor in is particular scholarships/grants that might be limited to those under a certain age. (I would think there are plenty for "mature" students as well, too, so it's not like all hope is lost there, either).

I started community college at 22, had my BS at 26 and am now doing an MSc at 45. You're not too old and I would report him if possible. He sounds like he's on a power trip at your expense and that is totally uncalled for.  >:(
