Gay Couple may be forced to move out of the U.S.
« on: October 05, 2004, 06:29:50 PM »
Hi Everyone. I'm new to the site. Me and my husband got married in San Fran last March, with the 4000 other couples that President Bush has now declared are enemies of the state. We live in Los Angeles, in the liberal state of California. We have a great life. Beautiful home, our own business, wonderful friends and family. But my husband is French, and has been unable to get legal status for U.S. immigration. Immigaration has become a big freaky roll of the dice since 9-11. Our immigration lawyer has told us to lay low until the climate changes.
If Bush is re-elected, we will be moving to London. Fortunatly, I was born in England, and have just finished the process of claiming dual citizenship. I have my British passport, and my husband has both French and Belgian ones. We are thinking London, as I have family there, and we both love the city, and we like what we see of the tolerant British society.
We would love to hear from other gay people, to hear your thoughts. I have plenty of worries about this move...selling the house, finding jobs, the colder climate etc. So this website will be a big help. Looking forward to feedback from you.

You have your own business?  Is it a corporation, and is your partner's name on that corporation?

My hubby knew a man who, by virtue of owning a corporation, was able to successfully defend his right to live in the US because he was paying US taxes.  This was pre-911 so it may have changed, but it is an avenue to look into.

Welcome to the forum.  I am sorry to hear that you are having troubles in CA...I will keep my fingers crossed that the whole gay marriage thing gets worked out in the States.  How silly that people can not just live a peacful life, esspecially when they are not causing harm to other.  Well, I digress...

So, welcome...I'm sure you will find this board a wealth of knowledge, and a GREAT support network for UK-bound folks.  Good luck!!

I have to add my wishes to those of others that people should be left to live in peace in their relationships.  Still congrats on the marriage!  That was at least one step.

I hope that you find what you need on the site and do not hesitate to post else where any questions you have.

The political climate in the States these days won't allow gay marriages. But if you think it will be allowed here, you need to hear Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, here. It's not legal in Britain, either. I'm sure you follow the news enough to know that. Why not move here and set up some kind of nonmarital partnership until the laws change? For the time being, you're going to be rowing against a tidal wave for your partnership to be legally considered a marriage. I say that with no judgment. I think the laws against it are stupid. But don't miss the forest for looking at the trees. I think, overall, gay relationships are much more accepted in the UK than they are in the US. I understand you probably have an axe to grind, but now's not the time to do it, with an international relationship. Move here, live together, and see how things go.

Just stopping in to say hello! I use to live in California and my dad still lives in Huntington Beach, although he works in Los Angeles City proper. I've nothing to say about the state of gay marriage in the US other than I agree with everyone else, what does no harm to others shouldn't be outlawed based on the so-called fundamentals of the "ruling party" - my FI has more words to say about the matter as his best friend since 11 is gay. He is also far more eloquent at expressing his displeasure and digust than I am.

ANYWAY - welcome to the forum!

Aloha,
Jen

I just want to say how great I think all of you all are for responding in such a friendly and empathetic way!

Gay people (me included) have learned to be grateful when we are treated like valuable members of society!

Welcome to UK Yankee, LuckyNicky!

Welcome to the board!  I can't add much other than to agree that if you are a friend of Elizabeths than you have to be totally cool.  I play on a hockey team over here (field hockey for Americans) and the lesbians on our team say that they feel very comfortable in London...it's very cosmopolitan and there seems to be more acceptance of differences than many other places I've lived.  And I just love London, so I can't say enough about it.  Best of luck to ya!   :)
