US Bank Account Issue
« on: November 09, 2012, 05:07:06 PM »
Hello,

I'm new to this board... been sitting in the Visa boards mainly.

After successfully marrying my UKC husband, I am now changing my name on everything.

I called my US bank (Wells Fargo) and they said I need to come into the branch with my marriage license to change.  I explained that I live in the UK and do not have a trip scheduled anytime soon and to see if I could mail them the documentation and they said no, I have to come in person.

Anyways, my concern is keeping my bank account up-to-date with my legal name.  My parents are co-signers on my US account and handle any transactions that need to be made.  My name is being updated with my employer and my paycheck will now be in a different name than my bank account reflects...

I can see this being an issue in the future if my parents try to deposit a check into my account and the name doesn't match.

Has anyone else experienced this?  How did you get around it?

Thanks for the help!

why don't you just open an account here with your married name and deposit the checks here and just leave the american checks in your maiden name as you still have your american passport in your maiden name

This is what I have done.  I use my married name here in the UK.  It's on my joint bank account with my husband and it will be on my UK passport when I (finally) get it.

You can leave everything in the US on your maiden name as I have done.  It's on my bank account, retirement account, passport, credit cards, etc.  You don't have to change it at all.

The bank is more concerned with having a correct SS number, which they do. You are entitled to use your maiden name, so no big deal there.

When you next go to the US, make the changes then, but in the interim, don't worry about it.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Thanks everyone.

I guess my concern is that my pay HAS to go into my US account.  They are unable to pay me in GBP into my UK account.  I'll just go with the account in my maiden name until I have a problem and worry about it then!  ;o)

So do you work for a US employer?

There really isn't a way around going in person to change the name on the account. It is for security purposes. You wouldn't want just anyone to be able to change your name simply by mailing in a marriage certificate.

You pay has to go into your US account, so is there any reason why your employer can't continue to use your maiden name?

Not illegal, and would solve your problem.
