Awe!

Does streaky bacon not cut it for you?

I've heard that larger Sainsburys sometimes carry small packs of Oscar Meyer (American-style) bacon...maybe check it out?  :)

Many of the larger Sainsbury's sell Oscar Mayer in the yellow pack.

:)  Personally, I don't find streaky bacon to be the same at all.  It looks similar, but doesn't quite crisp up the same.  Pancetta is a bit better, but still not quite the same.  Happily, I love back bacon, so I don't think about it too much. :)

Our local Sainsbury's stopped carrying it a couple of months ago and replaced it with a store brand version that is supposedly similar, but it really isn't :(

Ha, was travelling with a (Scottish) co-worker last week and he was telling me about the few years he spent in the US on secondment and how much he hated American Bacon and longed for 'Proper Bacon'  the entire time he was there (and sausages) and how nice it was to come back and get a 'proper bacon roll'!  ;D

Pancetta definitely has the texture of American bacon, but doesn't have the same flavour.  But it definitely helps fill a void when you're wanting crispy bacon!

Have you tried preparing the streaky bacon in the oven?  I recently started cooking it that way and found that it gets nice and crispy.

M&S does a smoked streaky bacon that goes really crispy and also gives off bacon fat for those of us that likes to make white gravy with it...I have been collecting the fat from it...

It REALLY does the trick!

It is usually on sale for 2 packs for £5...

Great to know. I'll have to give it a go. My biscuits and gravy aren't the same without the bacon fat.

This made me laugh, as an English guy living in the US (at least for the next few months), A proper British Bacon Sarnie is the first thing I look forward to when I get off the plane at Heathrow.

(Except the time we flew business class and they had bacon sarnies on the plane!)
