What British food should I bring back to the US?
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:48:24 PM »
So I'm going back stateside for Christmas and I would like to bring back some UK treats. What things would you bring back? Obviously I can't bring back anything that needs refrigeration.

Shortbread is a good idea I will add that to my list. I was thinking Soreen, treacle and maybe some Yorkshire tea.

I like that. It's definitely not something you could have picked up at World Market.

I'm a big fan of the commemorative holiday Celebrations tin. Yum!

I still use my Diamond Jubilee tin.  It's my go-to biscuit tin, and I love it.

As for things going home, I think it depends on what ages you are taking things for and the tastes of those at home.  For instance, I always take sweets that you can't find at home for my nieces and nephews.  They are very happy with a bag of Jelly Babies.  I also love taking mince pies during this time of year, although many in my family aren't keen on them--others love them though.

I bring back usually from M&S: shortbread/biscuits, Christmas Cake, Mince Pies (though this time for Thanksgiving I brought back jars of homemade mincemeat- my Mom said it was the best mincemeat she's ever had  ;D), Percy Pigs/Colin Caterpillar

I also like to bring Jelly Babies, sweeties like Parma Violets/Love Hearts, UK Smarties (even though I think they're gross), Kinder Surprises, Kinder Hippos, Penguin bars

Mr Kipling- bakewell tarts, blackcurrant pies, etc- people love Mr. Kipling!

Jars of locally made chutneys, jams, mustard, pickles

Whisky or Ciders or Beers that you can't find in the US (this takes some searching as tons of stuff is imported to the USA)

Teas- PG tips, Twingings

Fortum and Mason things

Have fun, I love to bring food gifts!  ;D

Bring a couple bottle of Sheridan's Coffee Layered Liqueur! Share one at Christmas dinner, and leave the other for them to enjoy little by little as a lingering memory of your visit.  It will make quite an impression, and you can't get it in the States at all.  Everything about it is striking.  The bottle, the composition, the taste, everything!

Get it at the Duty-Free shops in the airport though.  As of Nov 2012, it was about 30% cheaper there than even the "on special" bottles at Tesco's.  I've brought a couple bottles back myself.  One for my sister and I to share, and the other is going to be for all to share on Christmas day.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!

We took some butcher's shop pork pies...just froze them first, packed at last minute in plenty of paper. They were fine when we got there. It's usually cold in the hold of the plane so I think things generally keep ok.
Funny thing was my brother in law served them up with breakfast!

We brought back some coffee creamers that are kept in fridge but have a long life until opened.

I'm surprised you brought the pies, you're usually not supposed to bring meat into to the US -curious, did you declare them and they said 'OK'?

Errrr....maybe we didn't!

Actually...now I think about it I was a bit worried when we were picking cases off the belt and there was a customs dog sniffing around the suitcases but they gave us a miss!
