version of turbo tax
« on: November 24, 2012, 04:46:44 PM »
I'm thinking of getting Turbotax mainly to help with computation in doing the Federal tax credit, as well as the carry over I understand the principles and imagine a certain amount of tweaking the program is involved). There are various versions of turbotax and it looks like the choice is between delux ($29) and Premier ($49). Does anyone have any recommendations? Or think other programs are better?

Way over 90% of UK based tax professionals use ProSystem fx Tax.

http://www.cchgroup.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_ProSystem-fx%26reg-Tax_10151_-1_10001_TEMP0197?cm_mmc=New%20Site%20Redirect-_-Redirect%20-%20Tax.CCHGroup-_-Wild%20Cards-_-tax%20

I have also used ProSeries and Go System FastTax.

I don't know how well Turbo tax copes with PFICs as this is likely to affect approximately 50% of all US returns filed for 2012 - but we don't have updated IRS instructions yet for 2012 so one cannot be certain what reporting will be required.

Turbotax doesn't do treaties or PFIC. If you do buy it make sure you get the CD version as it allow you to tweek the actual forms......the online version doesn't

I saw there was a new draft form 8621 that seems to require annual reporting. Do most US expats in the UK fall foul of PFIC rules because they own stocks and shares ISAs, hold them in UK pensions that either don't qualify for treaty treatment or the treaty isn't claimed, or just directly own taxable UK unit trusts.

This ain't the IRS. It is the law signed on 18 March 2010 (the HIRE Act) - but suspended by the IRS on the 2011 instructions. No-one knows the rules for 2012 yet though.

Many thanks! TaxACT (free version) worked just fine and was easy to use.
