Getting a Second Opinion
« on: December 05, 2012, 02:33:41 PM »
I've been having some problems with intimacy since my son was born and was recently referred to a gynaecologist by my GP. The appointment was very quick and to the point, and after a  quick glance and some poking she said "Well, I don't know what's wrong!"

She went on to list some things it could be:
-A newly developed allergy
-Stress
-My cervix being in a different position after the baby
-Hormonal changes due to pregnancy/breastfeeding.
-Something else entirely, who knows -shrug-

She then gave me a bit of numbing stuff that is usually used for catheters and told me to essentially stick some of that up there and give it a go, and she sent me on my merry way.

I was left with an open appointment (I can go back to see her within 6 months) for if the problem "persists," but I feel like of course it will, because she hasn't done anything but slap a bandaid on it and didn't seem bothered about actually finding out what was wrong. As it stands I have enough numbing liquid for 6 "tries" and, even if that works, I'm back to square one.

I am not feeling hugely confident about seeing this woman again, even though I have the open appointment. Can I go back to my GP and ask for a different referral? Is that even done here? Should I just give this lady a second chance?

You can visit your local Family Planning clinic and see a gynecologist there. I always preferred the FPC for family planning/pap smears/all other gynecological matters.

I would second the idea of a family planning/sexual health clinic. They are usually fantastic as they see it all, everyday, all year long.  I prefer to go to mine for pap smears and the like.  I'm sorry that doctor was so dismissive!

Also don't forget to consider the emotional aspects. You've had a major change in your life and your heart/head play as much of a role as your other bits. Whoever you see should be taking that into consideration as well. Good luck!
