Private pediatrician?
« on: December 09, 2012, 11:55:00 PM »
I am really not happy with the way our surgery handles pediatric care. We have private insurance available, but I have no idea how to go about finding a private pediatrician. Suggestions?

Have you tried another surgery?

Customer service at your insurance should be able to give you a list of private pediatricians in your area?

Be aware though that private GP services are not plentiful. We will be moving to Surrey and our choices seem mainly restricted to a couple of hospitals, neither of which will be near to us.

Is it a big deal to switch surgeries? They seem to bee geographically assigned in our town...
I'll check in with insurance tomorrow - I just wasn't sure if I needed to get some sort of referral? I don't even know how referrals work here.

I think the use of a private pediatrician will depend on your insurance plan. We have a worldwide plan, and wherever we live customer service provides us with a list of PCPs/GPs/specialists etc and we self refer, or visit the GP if we are not sure what the problem is, or if it is just for something simple. However, some plans are for specialist and hospital visits only so you will have to find out your particular coverage.

Otherwise it shouldn't be a big deal to register at a different surgery. We lived in a village in Cambridgeshire which had a surgery and dental practice but chose to register in the neighbouring town after recommendations from friends.

Edited to add: Please know you have my sympathies over difficulties with your GP. Without going into detail we had problems with ours when my daughter was small and had a life threatening illness. It took a move to a different surgery and much insisting on my part that she was indeed ill. Wishing you all the best.

There are always geographic catchment areas, but everywhere I've lived in the UK has multiple surgeries covering that catchment area. Start asking around for recommendations and call surgeries. You'll likely find your catchment area is bigger than you realise and you can switch.
