trying to get sky box working with american tv
« on: December 11, 2012, 05:57:43 PM »
Hi guys
My husband came over from america with his lg42lc2d-ud tv.
it is an awesome tv and we would really like to get it to work with the sky + box.
we are connecting with a hdmi cable and the sound is working but not the picture.
it just says invalid format on the tv.
on the back of the tv it states 100-240v and 50-60hz, so we thought it would work here.
phoned sky and they got me to try all the different output types on the services, picture options but nothing worked.
any help much appreciated.

It likely won't work.  The picture formats are different between the US (NTSC) and the UK (PAL).  Unless you have a tv that plays both NTSC and PAL, you are out of luck.

Not out of luck, you still need the converter. HDMI standards aren't the same worldwide.

We have our US-bought Samsung TV hooked up to our Sky box using an HDMI converter. It works reasonably well.

We have an Orei XD-990 PAL to NTSC HDMI/RCA to HDMI Video Converter. There are apparently better ones out there, I was just looking to get something that worked quickly.

http://orei.com/orei-xd-990-pal-to-ntsc-hdmi-rca-to-hdmi-video-converter.html

It's basically an HDMI to HDMI converter. Our TV gave us the same message as yours until we plugged everything into that.

As others have said, the differences in TV signal are why you're having problems. When you thought it was compatible you were referring to the fact that the TV could be plugged into the UK electrical system without a transformer (which would be sufficient if all you used it for was to watch videos, play video games, etc. from the US), not that it would be compatible with the UK video signal.
