I think I said this on the other thread, but I think a lot of it is how the beef is ground.  Often when I look at premade burgers at the store they look almost like paste.  Gross.

There is a good place in Cambridge called Bill's.  I'm sure I will find out in a few seconds that it is a chain, just like every place in Cambridge.

Does it look a bit like a farm shop? Sell it's own Jams?

Then yes it's a chain, there was one in Lewes for ages, then spread to Brighton, there's a few in London now, there's like 20 of them.
They're *alright* I guess overpriced, we get breakfast in the covent garden one sometimes as it's five minutes from our house.
Oh the overpriced thing goes especially for the farm shop stuff, repackaged rubbish.

I used to love the original in Lewes when I was at uni:(

I *knew* it! Cambridge is really expensive.  Every time I think that a new place has opened, it turns out to be a chain.

So sneaky! Tescos has opened a chain of coffee shops that are supposed to look like independents but in fact are owned by Tescos.

As a newbie browsing through this forum I was immediately drawn to this thread as I am a burger fiend and fairly picky. The hands down best burger I've had in the UK (and I've had quite a few) is at the Greedy Cow in Margate. Better than any of the pricy gourmet ones I've tried in London (I'm looking at you, £20 burger at Burger and Lobster  [smiley=blank.gif] ) Handmade patties, perfectly seasoned and cooked, with great toppings. I know Margate gets a bad wrap, but I really love visiting it. Great shops and really good independent restaurants. If you want a great burger, I highly suggest the trip to Margate if you're in the London/Kent area. There a few pictures of the food on their tripadvisor review page. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g503912-d2329754-Reviews-The_Greedy_Cow-Margate_Isle_of_Thanet_Kent_England.html

If it wasn't so gross outside I'd make a trip out as it's been a few months since I've had one.

Burgers in some UK pubs I've tried can be very good, they're generally smaller and less greasy than US burgers.  Waitrose also sells good burger meat.

Fuddruckers and In N' Out burgers are my favourites in the US.

Remember the "pink slime" of McDonald's burgers story which broke out early last year?

You mean would I rather have beef in my beef, which is what pink slime is, or horse?

 ;)

And since they figure the horse issue has been going on for years, I probably have.  Oh well.

And Zebu.  How could I forget about the Zebu?

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/news/the-great-zebu-con--and-other-restaurant-swindles-462546.html

At least in the US they would get sued.  I can't imagine too many people would be happy with Zebu.

I always thought it was strange that they're called "beefburgers" in the UK (as opposed to "hamburgers". Turns out they're neither beef nor ham!  ;D

I'm guessing the "beefburger" term in UK is meant to differentiate it from burgers made from venison, lamb, pork, veal, buffalo, wild boar, chicken, and veggie. :-\\\\

That's cute!

No, beefburgers can be pretty much whatever they want them to be.

I'm up to trying anything once...as long as I know that's what I'm eating. I don't believe in saying ewww to something before I try it (well to a point).
But, don't put something in front of me and tell me its something its not. My ex did that years ago. I won't eat veal. I'm sure its very tasty..but I won't. He knew this. We ordered out in the States and he got what he told me was a pork cutlet sub with sauce and cheese on it. He asked me if I wanted to try a bite as it was really yummy...so I said yes. I took a nice big bite and as I was chewing he said oh...btw that's veal not pork. >:(
Yeah...that's just the kind of jerk he is.

Years ago -- it must have been during a test match with India or Pakistan -- we were in a local cafe having lunch. Two men came in and sat down. They looked at the menu and ordered cheeseburgers. They were very surprised when the burgers were in fact meat with cheese on it. I assume they thought it would be lumps of cheese in burger shape. Felt bad for them  :-\\\\

I agree, I think it's really shameful to lie about what was in them even if it was lying by omission.  I heard there was even pork in them and obviously if your kosher or muslim that is against your religious beliefs to eat it!

That could be quite tasty if made from the right kind of cheese--all warm and melty, maybe coated in breadcrumbs or something similar.

They have those in Prague.  It's called smažený sýr--breaded, fried cheese served hot and melty in a bun with lettuce and a creamy sauce.  You can get them from street kiosks.  They are soooo goood.  I used to eat them far too often when I lived there.
