umm How do I use the oven?
« on: January 07, 2013, 10:04:31 PM »
Since this is food related I hope it is okay to post here. I tried cooking a quiche earlier and it was in the oven for 20 minutes and the thing was still not hot!

I like in school accommodations so as far as I know nothing is wrong with the stove and oven. The electric was turned to the on position.

the oven has 3 settings.  grill, fan, and fan oven.
i have never used an oven like this before so i am not sure what i did wrong?

Was the outlet switched on?  That's always the likeliest culprit when electrical devices don't work.

Temperature knob separate from the turning on knob?
Did you let it pre-heat, 20 minutes isn't very long.

Assuming electric?

Nope, you need to pre-heat them. Will take about 10-15 minutes to come up to the temp it says on the knob, is there a light? Mine goes out when it reaches the temp I've set the knob to. Yours might be vice versa and turn ON when it reaches the required temperature.

Some electric ovens, particularly fan ovens will re-heat quicker but depends on your oven.

There's a separate setting for fan and fan oven? That's kind of odd! Did you put it on fan oven? That's what I'd have chosen. It should have been hot after 20 minutes even without pre-heating, though it's best to preheat. Very strange. If you still can't get it to work, do you have contact info for anyone to come and take a look at it? You need to have a working cooker!

We have a Teka electric fan oven in our rental apartment, and no instruction booklet!

So I googled the make and model and downloaded the instructions. Our oven has multiple icons, a few of which I could decipher, but having the instructions made cooking so much easier!

If the fan is turning, you have all of the knobs in the correct positions and the power on, then it may be the heating element. It's usually a quick and easy fix, but if you've never done it before, get a handyman out for it. Also, if it's a managed rental, it shouldn't cost you anything to get it repaired if you call your letting agency. If it's privately rented, check your tenancy agreement. Some landlords will cover it, some won't.

Great idea! I thought of that idea after I posted, but you beat me to it!  ;D

Our oven has this odd "fan only" setting--you have to keep turning the dial to get to one that actually is "fan + heat".  (It's a Smeg. And for those of you Red Dwarf fans, lives up to its name.) So, it will "sound" on (you can hear the fan), but never heat up!
I had to google the oven when I first moved here--and the first few website were all people complaining about how impossible it was to figure out! That made me feel better as at least it was one thing that had nothing to do with my being American!

LMAO...I hate our fan oven with a passion (I don't think it works properly) but I'm getting better at it. It took me awhile to figure out at what temp to cook everything. And its a good thing I can still barely make out the markings as they are starting to wear off so I can see where the knob needs to be. We also have the fan only setting and its supposed to help defrost food faster...and it does work.
I have this terrible tendency to accidentally shut the switch off the power to the cooker and forget to turn it back on. Hubby always laughs at me because I always think its broken  ;D

I'm glad to hear that! Hot food! Yippee!

For what it's worth, I adore our fan oven. We have two - one fan and one ordinary and I've grown to hate the non-fan one!
