Glad you are getting to grips with pesky UK appliances!

We bought a fan oven for our last home in the UK and it worked out fantastically. They heat up quicker than a traditional electric oven ,and the temperature is supposed to be even throughout the oven. So no having to cook only one tray of cookies on the top shelf!

You should find that recipes (and instructions on the back of ready prepared foods!) will have temperatures and times for both regular electric and fan ovens. Temps should be lower, and cooking times slightly shorter for fan ovens. The oven will also heat to temperature more quickly giving you savings on electricity bills.

LMAO...I hate our fan oven with a passion (I don't think it works properly) but I'm getting better at it. It took me awhile to figure out at what temp to cook everything. And its a good thing I can still barely make out the markings as they are starting to wear off so I can see where the knob needs to be. We also have the fan only setting and its supposed to help defrost food faster...and it does work.
I have this terrible tendency to accidentally shut the switch off the power to the cooker and forget to turn it back on. Hubby always laughs at me because I always think its broken  ;D

Ha. We must have the same oven! Ours is quite tetchy and, even with the fan,  has definite hot and cold spots. I do like fan ovens in general (had one in the US). I am *mostly* convinced that this one was both cheap and not maintained well (husband wasn't a big believer in cleaning ovens before I came over, and there is only so much I can repair...). Also, we have electric hobs. Blergh. Next house will have gas hobs!

I think if ours worked properly it would be great. Our landlord got the cheapest one (LOL...I can say that he was best man in our wedding and he HATES to spend money) and the people that lived here before never cleaned it. We have a gas hob, but again, its a pretty cheap one as even at the lowest possible setting, I can't simmer anything because I can't get it low enough. To cook rice, I actually have to pull the pan half way off the burner and keep a very close eye on it. I miss my moms stove back in the states...it was gorgeous...if a stove can be  ;D
