We were lying on the sofa talking about the fact that I couldn't afford to go to uni. full-time anymore which would effectively end my student visa and so we briefly talked about how breaking up wasn't an option and that neither of us was interested in going to America and so he said "well I'll marry you then."

We're not big on overblown romantic gestures, but I've never loved anyone this much....  ;)

He mentioned going for a walk.  So we were walking around his neighborhood (him talking the whole time about us being apart) when we came to this park (all part of his plan).  He opened the gate for me and we sat down.  It then occured to me that he might be proposing, so I put my hand on his leg figuring if it were in his pocket he'd flinch or lose his train of thought.  Nope.  So I put it to the back of my mind.

He was planning to do it there in the park, but a group of teenagers walked in and were completely plastered.  One guy even began...um...peeing on the jungle gym (not sure what its called in the UK).  Craig got so upset.  So we left.  All we heard as we were walking out was, "Hey, we scared those people".  We just walked back to his house, where he proposed on the back of the car.  Poor thing.  It really was a sweet idea.  Bless him. :-*

I proposed to my wife on her birthday in May of last year. We sadly could not spend her birthday together and I sent her a birthday present of a ring and a letter, which arrived with perfect timing. Here is the letter I sent her:

If I had a minute for every thought I had of you
each fantasy I have had of how your skin would feel on mine
you hair falling across my face as we touched our lips together
the smoothness of your back and the hollow of your spine
to feel your stomach tremble as I run my finger across it
of running my hand through your hair while you fell asleep
laying behind you and holding you close
of making the fears of the thunder fade away in the night
holding your hand and walking along a river
throwing treats to seagulls at the edge of the ocean
just sitting quietly and watching you speak about your children
getting you tipsy and filled up on chocolate
watching your face as you window shop
for some new gadget to hold your interest
and close your eyes as you listen patiently
for the sound of a whiporwill in the darkened wood

If I even had a second for each time you made me catch my breath
with the sound of your laughter and the smiles in your voice
the sudden realization that one day soon you'd be with me
a vison of us married and joined yet somehow free
finally being whole again as we may once have been
or been the whole time but not knowing that the other existed
the piece we felt was missing that we searched for in our hearts
that perfect friend companion lover understanding everything
without anything even having to be said

If I had a single hour for each memory of you
that haunts my every waking dream
and keeps me awake day after day night after night
in anxious suspense of when we will first touch
and never let each other go inseperable and one
to live at last knowing that there is something out there
greater than ourselves and kind beyond words
to have brought two halves together in a most amazing fashion
With time and distance meaning nothing in the end

If I only had a day for the way you fill my soul
a living inspiration to paint the world with words
to share what's buried in my heart with the only one who knows
just how to understand me and love me totally
never having to apologize for anything ever again
  as all is forgiven unconditionally

If I added up these moments days hours minutes seconds
I would have in all a lifetime I would want to share with you
To fill my days with blessings and my nights with tender thoughts
A thousand lifetimes more than that would be left over still
to find each other's heart and soul intertwined forever
to live the stuff of legend the tales of perfect love
that make mankind write them down in words on paper
so others can see that things such as this are truly real
and not just the imaginings of a poetic saga
but the story of magic and wonder
that reality puts fantasy to shame with

I wish you a happy birthday Jade
  and many more to come
this time I could not be with you
but it will be the last one of those
you stole my heart with a single word
that never even came from your lips
the "Hi" came from your fingers instead
and I am all the more in love for it
I would not have been in any shape to respond as I did
had you spoken the words instead
since each time you speak my world turns upside down
and I become utterly and helplessly an absolute idiot

I hope my words please you in some small and thoughtful way
and make you smile and hold your heart
knowing that you hold mine there as well
to say "I love you" is an understatement
to say you are my entire universe is slightly closer to the truth
you are so much to me that even I can't create the words to express it
so this is all I can say until I learn new words to write

I love you. You are my everything.
Nothing else matters to me but you and I together.
You had, have, and always will have my heart and understanding
There is nothing I wouldn't give away to be there to kiss away the tears
and fill your life with laughter and knowing smiles
There is love in the world but this is far beyond love this thing we share
this is something that would bring tears to the angels
and gives the very stars a reason to shine in the night sky
this is the reason for living itself
and I thank you for being there at just that instant
in just that frame of mind and at just that particular place
for wanting to tell me that single word that changed both our lives

  Happy Birthday, I love you!

  Jared

now stop crying and have some fun in the short time that you are
officially a year older than me!

Richard proposed on the phone on June 2, 2001.  We'd known each other for two years, but we hadn't met in person yet.  He'd just gotten home from a friend's wedding and he was all sappy (and a little tipsy!).  He said "I want to ask you...", but he didn't and we just kind of changed the subject.  We kept talking for a while and I finally said "I want you to ask me."  And so, after what seemed like the longest silent pause the world has ever known, he did.   ;D

And yep, there have been a couple of in-person, with-the-ring proposals since.  Most notably in the little cafe in the regional airport where I used to live...over Moon Pies and Pepsis!   ;D

AAW.  KC I can just see him saying that!!!

Well mine was a two part one...

When he came to the USA the first time we met up in NYC because I had a conference there.

On our last day we went up to the Empire State and he gave me a nice card with a nice poem.

I thought awww... that's nice.

Fast forward 3 months and I fly to the UK. He tells me he wants me to brign the card with me.  I sit there thinking.. okay sure... odd but sure.... He takes me to see Thomas Hardy's cottage and we make our way to the town of Lyme Regis and to the Cobb (a rocky pier type place)

It was a lovely sunny day...

He tells me why don't we sit here for a while... I say sure (I love love love the sea).  So he asks if I still have the card.  I say yes and pull it out so he says.. good because I have a second one for it.  So I open it and it's another nice poem.  I look at him.  He looks at me.  That's it.  So he gently leans over and says... there is a technique that some poets used to use where the first letter of each line spells out something....(still no clue here)  so I look at the first card....and if you read down it reads W-I-L-L Y-O-U and the second one reads.... M-A-R-R-Y M-E. I was about to fall off the wall and into the water when I look up and he is sitting there next to me with an open box and my beautiful engagement ring staring at me.

*sigh......

I said yes of course!

The thign that gets me is that I showed that first card to so many people and no one got it!

He even bought my ring on July 4th.

*sigh

It was over our after-dinner cognacs, standing on the terrace overlooking the Garfagnana Valley, in northern Tuscany.

We were chatting about life in general and DH asked "so, do you think you might want to get married some day?"

I was slightly confused, but excited.  It sounded like a marriage proposal, but I didn't want to blurt out "Yes, of course I'll marry you!", just in case he was asking a hypothetical question.  That would have been a disaster!

So I replied "Yes, I would like to get married some day, if the right person asked me."  I smiled and winked.

DH realized I was not sure as to whether it was a proposal or not, so he rephrased "Kellie, will you marry me!"  to which I said "Yes, of course!"

The setting was perfect, in Italy.  The balcony was tiled in terracotta with Cypress trees and it was mid summer.  It was such a happy moment.  And here we are, eight years later with two beautiful boys.  And we still love Italian food and our brandies!

November 3, 2003 we were in NYC, it was a glorious day! Richard and I were walking around in Central Park and decided to go to the Diamond District to get an idea of what kind of rings we both liked. A women from one of the stores came outside to ask us what we were looking for and that she liked my hair. How could I not follow her in?! We looked at a bunch of settings but really I thought we were just getting an idea, then Richard said We'll take it! I looked at him like what the heck are you talking about, then I was in shock, and kept asking if he was sure!  Richard said, you are not getting it till I ask your parents. He made me wait till after we had dinner in our favorite Restaurant in the City. (Pure torture) I had to have a lot to drink that night!!!  We got home and my parents were watching TV. We went upstairs to put stuff away and I asked if I should stay upstairs. He said no, I want you to come down too. So I went down and sat next to my parents on the couch. Then Richard asked my parents if he could ask them a question. My dad was clueless and said sure. Then Richard said, I'd like to ask for your blessing to marry Stacey.' My mother started to cry immediately and my dad jumped up and said of course. Then I started to cry. My mom said yes too eventually. Then Richard got on his knee and asked me. I said Yes! It was so nice, especially since he knows how close I am to my parents! I could not have asked for a more romantic way to be proposed too!

My DH proposed while we sat on the living room floor drinking Champagne and eating chinese take out.  It was all very sweet.  I knew he was going to ask, since I picked out my ring, I just was not sure when.  It was was lovely night and so was the ring ;)

Christmas Day during dinner.  He gave me a cute little jewelry box with 3 drawers in it.  Each drawer contained a small gift, one of which was my engagement ring.  He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

I still have the box (and the ring, obviously!)   ;D
I'm sorry.  I'm just not cool.

His step mother proposed to me.  DH, his step mom, his dad and i were driving up to Birmingham to see DH's gran.  We were talking about what I would do when my visa ran out.  his step mother just said, "you'll have to get married then.  How's November?"  We both looked at each other and said "November's fine."

My fiance was in town for my 30th birthday.   My dad & step-mom decided to fly down to celebrate and to meet him.  And as a suprise, my brother & sister-in-law flew in too!!!  So he was able to meet everyone.  He wanted to meet my family in person before the proposal and wanted to ask my dad.  He was so nervous, it was really cute.  He didn't have the opportunity to talk to dad in person, so he called him when we were down in Austin.  He made me leave the room (I went to take a shower) so he could ask.  I have never been so nervous!  Finally, after what seemed like hours... he popped his head in the bathroom and said... hooray!  he said okay! :D

Anhow... he was leaving in 2 days... so the next morning he asked if we could go ring shopping.  We found a beautiful ring at the first shop we stopped at.  It was special that we picked it out together.  It is a really unique design and I love it so much!

Sooo... we drive back to Dallas, get the ring sized, and then head out to meet some friends for dinner.  He asked if we could stop at Good Records (record store... linked to our meeting) before dinner.  We went in and we were both looking around.  He said, hey come here... look at this... and I knew was was coming next, but I still got really excited and nervous and happy... he got down on one knee... said some really nice things and the next thing I know I've got a ring on my finger and really cheesy grin on my face.

A couple of our friends were actually in the store at the time and were not looking... so they walked over and we were looking all starry eyed and goofy and they asked what was up... and we said... "we just got engaged."  They responded... "when?"  "uh, like right now!"

Then we met up with a big group of friends for dinner... had really good mexican food, a lot of margaritas, and the boys were drinking jager... our engagement was new news to our friends as well, so it was fun to announce to everyone and celebrate! It was magic!

I feel so unromantic now! My husband (that's LondonHalo to you lot) had planned to propose to me under the stars on Huntingdon Beach New Years Eve 2002/3 (I found all this out later).  Unfortunately we were running late to meet some friends so we didn't stop by the beach on the way as planned. Then the friends announced they were expecting a baby which put Stu off his stride again. Then he decided to take me to the beach AFTER the festivities, by which time we had consumed rather a lot of wine, sake, vodka and god knows what else. We walked down to the beach and stopped at a shop to buy a bottle of bubbly (I still didn't know by the way...). Unfortunately Stu thought a guy in the shop was trying to hit on me and that started a drunken argument between us.  We carried on to the beach. I got really mad at him for being jealous of nothing and ran into the sea with all my clothes on. When I came back Stu had tipped the bubbly all over the beach.  We then got in a taxi and went home, still bickering drunkenly. Once home at his place, we drank some more vodka and were still arguing when Stu suddenly blurted out "I was going to propose to you tonight" and I said "Well don't let me stop you!" so then he got down on one knee (or was it two? bit blurry!) etc etc.

I should add that he has been known to be a  lot more romantic than that!
