How about... Actual cheese? Like... Cheddar?
“It was when I realised I had a new nationality: I was in exile. I am an adulterous resident: when I am in one city, I am dreaming of the other. I am an exile; citizen of the country of longing.” ― Suketu Mehta.

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Not sure if this is in the other post, but you can get Kraft Processed Cheddar around London and on Amazon. It's similar, but doesn't melt as easily - I cut it into cubes and it works fine. I get mine on Edgware Road, up across from Paddington Green Police Station.

Haha. Whenever I'm having a whine about something I don't like about the UK, DH always comes back with "whatever, you guys squirt out cheese from a can!" I have never used spray-can cheese nor have I ever been a fan of Velveeta, but I am guilty of liking White American Cheese (specifically Land O Lakes). I don't care if it's processed, that s!@$ is good and the only cheese that should be on a grilled cheese or used in a baked macaroni and cheese.  ;D

I found a recipe online the other day for American cheese.. It looks and sounds like Velveeta consistency.  Might be worth trying.   http://www.browneyedbaker.com/2013/01/22/diy-american-cheese/

HAHAHAHAHAHHA OMG! SAME! He's CONSTANTLY on about "why do you have fake cheese?! who squirts cheese out of a can?!" I'm like OH MY GOD! I DON'T EVEN LIKE CHEESE THAT MUCH, MUCH LESS SPRAY CHEESE! hahaha He loves getting me worked up over it. I'm not sure who educated him on american cheeses.

OK, I know velveeta cheese is not "cheese" but damn it tastes good when you're craving it. We would eat it once a year on New Years Eve with a can of chili and some rotel tomatoes. My kids LOVED it. I figured once a year wouldn't hurt.
And I do miss Land O Lakes American cheese...nothing like it for a grilled cheese sandwich with a nice bowl of tomato soup!

Velvetta is awesome!   8)

It's great in certain recipes.  I did find Kraft Singles at our local Budgens.  I buy it just to make my grilled cheese!!  ;D

Last time I had Velveeta (it's been a few years now), all I could think was - wow, this tastes like nothing (good)! And I used to love the stuff - grew up eating it. After years of eating great cheese here, I just can't stomach it any longer. Worse is Velveeta Light, which actually has (shows on the ingredients list) dried corn syrup in it. Corn syrup. In cheese!  :-X

Been thinking about trying to make queso with the homemade cheese sauce I make for mac & cheese, just adding tinned chilies (I ordered off t'internet) & tomatoes. Used to think making cheese sauce was an ordeal, but once you've done it a few times, seems easy!

I do this all the time :) A cheat's way is to buy fry some chorizo/chillies/garlic/shallot, add a cheesy ready made pasta sauce then melt in cheeses like red leicester, instant queso.

You can, if you want, make a velveeta like melty cheese from decent cheese by adding a bit of sodium citrate - http://www.chow.com/recipes/30493-perfectly-melting-cheese

I don't understand the Velveeta love. I know some people ... OK, a lot of people ... say it makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches, but I disagree. I think maybe it makes the grilled cheese sandwiches that people remember from their childhood, so nostalgia kicks in they remember it fondly. I'm the same about Ribena - it makes me happy but I know it's not actually good! To me, a Velveeta grilled cheese sandwich is like two pieces of bread stuck together with flavourless neon glue. Vile.

Hear, hear!  I make grilled cheese with double gloucester.  Melts like a dream and tastes of actual cheese.
(though I must admit I like Ribena and didn't grow up with it  :-[)
