Colorado Springs to Leicester then London
« on: January 30, 2013, 04:16:15 PM »
Good Afternoon,

I moved to the UK in 2003 from Colorado Springs, where I lived for a couple of years (before that Georgia, before that Missouri, before that Ohio...) I'm from a military family background, so I like to see new places.
I married a Brit in 2003 and were given so much grief over his citizenship application that we were literally in tears-so we moved to the UK. His parents chose the place, Leicester. I'd never heard of it and at the time only found statistical and basic facts info on the net about it.
After living there for 8 years, we relocated to London so I could start a temp job at a Soho-based company. It lasted through March 2012 and now I'm desperate to find work again. It seems very tough to find work despite all the interviews and my more recent quals from studying at a college and university in Leicester and then even further with Learndirect.
I found this quote stating British citizens are given 1st choice and EU citizens are given preference thereafter before consideration of hiring an American would be given. I've come to this forum to learn how that affects me as someone with long time residency and Indefinite Leave to Remain and no criminal record now or previously.
Would this still be interfering with me finding work? Also, I am very homesick and it's nice to meet fellow expats. Hello!

Welcome to the forum :).

I found this quote stating British citizens are given 1st choice and EU citizens are given preference thereafter before consideration of hiring an American would be given. While it is true that UK and EU citizens are given preference over hiring people from non-EU countries, this only applies when it comes to hiring people who currently live overseas and who do not yet have permission to live and work in the UK.

One of the main reasons for this is because in general, in order to sponsor a non-UK/EU citizen for a work visa, the UK company has to prove they could not find a single suitable candidate already living/with permission to work in the UK or the rest of the EU, before they can offer them a job and get them a visa.

However, as you have ILR, you do not need to be sponsored for a work visa, so you should be given the same treatment as UK and EU citizens when it comes to applying for jobs.

Jobs are difficult to come by for everyone right now, even UK citizens. I am a UK citizen with masters degrees in physics and geophysics and it took me over 2 years to find a graduate job between 2008 and 2010, due to the recession. No companies were hiring recent graduates, so not even UK citizens could get a job (at one point I think there were something like 75 British graduates applying for every vacancy). Although that was right in the middle of the recession, I still don't think jobs are very easy to get even now, so it's unlikely that your nationality is the cause.
