Hello!
« on: February 02, 2013, 01:00:09 AM »
Hi Everyone,
New to this board and found it on Google. Our family is just the 3 of us, husband and 9 (going on 19) year old son and myself. We are "trying" to make a 4 month move to the UK in August - December. Husband received a research fellowship from Keele University and I cannot tell you how excited we are for this opportunity!!! I've never been to the UK but have a weird obsession with lots of things UK so I am very glad to get the chance to live there and not just be a tourist. The reason I say "trying" is because it is becoming a lot more difficult than I thought. From the visas, schools for my son, finding an apartment to figuring out how much things will cost. Unfortunately, his fellowship is unpaid (which we are working on getting changed). Plus we have to maintain out home here in the US. I'm sure the 100s of questions I have are somewhere on these forums so I'll take a look around and if not, I'll ask! Thank you for being so welcoming!  :)

Have you tried using airbnb to rent your home whist you're here and maybe do a home share?

Hi Karen,

No! I'd never heard of it, but I'm on the site now and am looking through it. Thanks for the tip!

Hi and welcome tennisgirl858!
Best wishes with planning your move. It is daunting and getting it all pulled off is tricky. I hope you're able to get the fellowship on a paid basis.

Have you looked through Rightmove? Lots listed there for rent.

Bristolren, I'm curious is you know much about house sharing? Do you happen to know of any good ways of going about it?
9/11/2012 Husband mailed his US citizenship application.
9/17/2012 Received e-mail stating his application has been entered into the system.
9/22/2012 Hubby received letter with date for finger printing.
10/12/12 Hubby went for finger printing.
10/26/12 Dh got a letter stating when he should appear for his interview and test- 11/27/12- just a month away!!!
11/27/12 We went to dh's interview and test- he passed and we went back 4 hours later for the Oath Ceremony! 95 people from 38 countries, really pretty cool!
So he's now a US citizen!!

Hi Beccarose,

Yes, I've been on rightmove and I've contacted several letting agents for rental units. We are only going for 4/5 months and most landlords (I've been told) only rent for a minimum of 6 months, so that's the roadblock we are running into. Right now, I've secured on campus housing (at the cost of $5,000!) but this includes utilities etc, so at the end of it all, the cost for a place off campus may just cost us around the same. But as it gets closer to our date, I will go through the rightmove site again and will contact agents/landlords and ask if they would be willing to consider a less than 6 months lease, it doesn't hurt to ask. It will be case by case and it's really too early to ask now.

Still waiting on hearing back from the Uni on paid fellowship!!! Cross your fingers... :-\\\\
