i just received a HMRC PAYE self assessment form
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:23:35 PM »
It's asking me for basic employment/NIN info. Do I just fill it in and send it back? I work for an employment agency and my pay is processed through an umbrella company. I just moved here in Oct 2012 and started working in Nov. I'm hoping that I've been paying the correct amount (I've got my NIN and have done since I started working here.)

There's no accompanying letter or anything that says why they have sent me this letter. Is this standard procedure or?

I guess it made me nervous since normally we don't hear from the IRS unless they're trying to get more money out of us! ;)

Thanks!

It's been a while since I worked for an umbrella company, but HMRC mails me stuff all the time telling me I have a new tax code or they need me to fill out X form or whatever. (I have my own limited company here, so that's probably part of it.) I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that they want money - they seem very pro-mail in general!

All I can find is OCA8 in the bottom corner. All it says instructions wise is "Please complete the following information so I can bring my records up to date" and it asks for basic details like name/address/NIN and my employer info.

Thanks, EQ! I hope so. On a related note, I'm starting my own business so I might pick your brain in the future about becoming a limited company vs. other options! :)

I have a small side business as well, and it was my registering as a sole trader that triggered a similar letter, I think. In comparison, my husband, who has a company here, has always does PAYE via his company, but this year ALSO had to self-assess as he received payment from a uni in Singapore that was separate from both his Uni job and his company.

I think there are a few things that trigger letters like that, but it doesn't necessarily mean you owe any money.

I assume you have seen this:

It sounds as if you did not tell your employer what your NINO is?
