Michigan -----> Manchester
« on: March 03, 2013, 02:43:03 PM »
Hi there!  My husband has been offered a position within his company in the Manchester office.  We will be heading over next week to check out the area!

This year we will have been married for 10 years and have 3 kids ages 4, 6.5, and 8.

I'll be searching the forums for help mainly with the kids as the visa/work stuff is taken care of by his company.  My oldest has ADHD and the middle one has ADD as well as allergy induced asthma.  So they are both on several daily medications.  I haven't even begun to research education yet!  They are picky eaters.

I'm looking forward to getting to know the area and hopefully can call it home this summer!!

Welcome-- We moved from Wisconsin to Manchester about 18 months ago.  We have a 3 &4.5 year old and a baby on the way.

We're also here on a Tier 2 for DH work- he has a position at Manchester University.  We've gotten settled quickly but lived in the UK previously for 3 years so it that background helped us transition the kids a little easier.

Don't be afraid to ask questions on here-- it's a great community.  Not sure how much help I can be but feel free to ask :)

Thanks for the welcome!  We are pretty excited about this all!  Like I said we fly over next week on Monday to check out the area.  We lived in Chicago area for about 5 years so I'm curious to see how the area compares.

Welcome, I am also in Manchester, it's a great place to live. I have been here for 14 years and I have two little kids. I can try to help with school and stuff.

What areas do you guys live in and/or recommend we start looking for housing in?  We've been hearing near the airport and south side of the city?

His office is near the stadium where Manchester United plays.

I live right near Old Trafford Stadium in a neighbourhood called Firswood, it borders on a very popular area called Chorlton(cum-Hardy) and its a lovely place to live. South Manchester is a brilliant place to live, lots to do for families great public transport links, good affordable housing. Chorlton is an area where its really easy to meet people are there are tons of primary schools...you are spoiled for choice here.

I would look in Chorlton, Didsbury, Sale, Old Trafford, Urmston, Flixton...all areas near to Old Trafford. Firswood, where I live, is walking distance to Old Trafford stadium, worth having a look at, rentals are affordable and you can walk to a ton of stuff. PM me if you have anymore questions.

We also live in South Manchester-- near Sale (Brooklands really) and find it very nice and convenient to everything really.  We also looked all around the area but needed a place that took a dog so that limited us some.  You can have a look on right move. co.uk at places.  It has everything from all the different agencies and you can also search the schools in the areas you might be interested in.  It will also have their Ofstead links where you can red about how they are rated and such.

Will you have a car during your visit?  We rented one to help us get a feel for things but I would suggest getting a GPS right away as it is easy to get turned around and lost quickly.

Chorlton is lovely! I live in the city centre, but if my husband and I didn't want to walk to work each day (we work at the University of Manchester), we'd definitely be looking over there.
Racheee will have loads of great advice! I would also say to check out the city centre when you're here, just to get a feel for all the cool stuff there is to do!

We did rent a car.  Can we use GPS on our phones?  Well...his phone which is a work one.  I'm not using mine over there!!

We do have a small dog too.  Not 100% if she's coming with us though.  If it turns out to be a huge PITA to get her there she will stay with family over here.
