HELP!!!
« on: March 13, 2013, 03:05:19 PM »
So I've finally figured out how to live life without GOYA... Anyone that knows any Latinos knows that we CAN NOT cook without some kind of Goya product  :P

so my DH searched for instructions on how to make home made Sazon and Adobo two of the main things needed to season anything. The problem is I'm having a really hard time being able to find Culantro or otherwise knows as Long Coriander, Mexican Coriander, Thai Coriander or Sawtooth Coriander. A lot of names for one thing huh?  :o

Anywho in order for me to make home made Sofrito I need it so can anyone please help me complete my Puerto Rican food by helping me locate where can I find it in Birmingham?

please  :-*

Hmm, you can get it in Chinatown in London, is there a Chinatown in Birmingham?

There is a Chinatown in Birmingham.  If you haven't visited it yet, PhillyMirah, it's between the Bullring markets and the Hippodrome.

It's not the same thing. Culantro is not misspelled cilantro :)

Wait... cilantro and culantro (never heard of this one) are not the same thing?

With all the 'also known as' references to various corianders, are they not similar enough that you can substitute bog-standard coriander for it?

Apparently it has a stronger taste. Though if the OP can't find it, maybe giving your recipes a try with store bought cilantro/coriander will have to do. :-/ Or finding seeds online to grow your own?

I'd start with the Bullring Indoor Market. And this that might help: http://www.tastethecaribbean.eu/ukshop.html

There's a massive Wing Yip in B'ham too, might be worth a call.

I substitute, and it does not really work out.  :-\\\\

It is just not the same.

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

If all else fails, try growing your own!

Culantro has an aniseed note to it and it's really strong, texture is a bit different, I use it in Thai cookery, essentially you could sub coriander but coriander is more fragrant and not quite the same.

It's like how I always use garlic chives even though you can sub chives, not really the same :)

I just get friends to ship me out bottles of adobo periodically. Much easier :)

I've cooked Mexican/Tex-Mex my whole life and never heard of 'GOYA'.  Sounds like you're cooking a different style of 'Latino' food to what I'm familiar with!

I dont know if you have looked into this at all, but pretty sure you would find adobo (or chiles in adobo) in these places, if you don't mind shopping online:

Good luck finding what you need!

Goya is a brand name - it's more of a Puerto Rican, Cuban thing...I'm not sure if it's associated as much with southwestern stuff.
Ring the bells that still can ring

I don't know where they're based, but maybe it's a regional thing. Goya was certainly all over RI, though I've never used any of their products.
