5Live this morning
« on: March 25, 2013, 01:21:13 PM »
I was listening to 5Live this morning and thought I might have been hearing a forum member talking about the whole immigration situation for spouses.

Was I right? Your Call
August 2008 - Tier 4 - Student Visa
February 2010 - Tier 1 - PSW
January 2012 - FLR(M)
June 2014 - ILR (finally!)

That is me.

One of the producers contacted me to be on the show, because I talk about immigration (a tiny bit) in my stand-up, and one of the producers saw my performance. And we sort of made facebook friends. And she had this show coming up, so she contacted me.

I was supposed to get to a particular POINT, agreed too by the producers, but they cut me off, and had that lame guy on who claimed to 'have sex with 40 immigrant women', because that is important news.

Gotta love the press!

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

When I heard Laura - I thought, wait a minute maybe I am wrong, but then I heard what you had to say and I thought you put your point across very well, something that doesn't happen too often on 5Live.

Oh I thought sounded so bad! I did not even get to my point, which was that 'you cannot lump ALL immigrants of every kind' in one crazy blob, all together, for the policy making process. And that the application process is actually quite complex, and overpriced, even for spouses, and many people make UNDERSTANDABLE mistakes, and have lost a lot of money that way - and there is no one to TALK too if you have a question. Blah, blah, blah...

They totally cut me off - even the producer was angry that they cut me off.

But, whatever.

Thank you Panda! xoxoxoxo

Argh! You totally got cut off right when you were getting to the good stuff. I think that show needed more "immigrant" viewpoints, but the guy after you made both me and DH cringe. Way to play the loophole game, dude.

What you were able to say sounded good, Lara!  It's just a shame you couldn't make all of your points.

Thank you peeps.

I get so frustrated with all of the 'anti-immigrent' ranting that I have to hear, every day, on TV, in the papers, from random people.

It's gross.

I thought you did a great job, Lara. It is a shame you couldn't make all your points, but radio shows are unfortunately always like that. (Well, except for the nutters, who they seem to let ramble on and on...  ::) )  You have such a sweet-sounding voice!
