Biometrics and ILR?
« on: March 25, 2013, 03:09:22 PM »
Hello All,

I had my biometrics taken in Sept 2011, just before I applied for my spousal visa. I have never received a BRP. In looking through the SET(M) requirements for ILR, I see that I will need one. Can anyone tell me how this would work - will I need to have a separate appointment from the the appointment at a local PEO to have biometrics done again/apply for BRP?

If you did biometrics outside the UK, you don't get a BRP. It is not a requirement for ILR, just that you have to send it if you do have one. You will also receive one as your ILR rather than a passport sticker, and if you're doing it at the PEO, they take biometrics then and there.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

Fantastic, thanks! I assume they just take fingerprints, photo, etc. and then send it to your address?

If you pay extra to apply in person at a PEO, you will have your fingerprints and photo taken on the day, then your visa will be processed and assuming it is successful, you will receive your passport and BRP in the mail 1-2 weeks after the appointment.

If you apply by post, a couple of weeks after you mail your application in, you will receive a biometrics invitation letter. You then need to go to a post office/PEO and give your biometrics (have photo and fingerprints taken). From there, the biometric data will be transmitted electronically to UKBA and then they will start processing your visa... a couple of months later, you should receive your passport, documents and BRP in the mail.

Great info, thanks ksand. It is a general rule of thumb for the passport to be returned withing 1-2 weeks? Sometimes longer?

The BRP is your visa, so you will get it and your passport back when the visa has been approved.

If you apply in person then they are supposed to send the BRP within 7 days. I don't think anyone has waited more than 2 weeks and most people recently have received theirs within about 4 days or so.

If you apply by post then your BRP and passport and documents will arrive about 2-3 months or so after you apply.
