American or Austrailian Dentist recommendations
« on: March 27, 2013, 12:33:45 PM »
Hi,

I am sure some will find this rude  :-[ but I am really scared of the dentists and dental care standards here.  Does anyone have a good American or Austrailian trained dentist they can recommende?  I will travel and really don't care about location.  Thanks!

My dentist is English and he's AMAZING.  Dr. Cummings with Beechcroft Dental in Wokingham.  I would say I receive a better standard of care and more advanced technology from him than I had in the US.

Sorry I can't help with a recommendation ... but have you tried a British dentist? Or are you basing your fears on ... I don't know. On something irrational?

My first dentist here was so-so, but I now have one who's FABULOUS. Exactly like my very good US dentist. Really, there's no difference at all. Some are great, some are fine and some are awful - same as anywhere.

Maybe try shopping around a bit?

Why are you scared?  Are you expecting it to be different, somehow?

Why limit to only US and Australia? What about Asia or Europe?

Without trying to find the cause of your (possibly unfounded) fear, here is a list of dentists from the American embassy.  American trained are marked *

It looks like it will cost you dearly as they are private with no NHS subsidy, but if it helps your phobia I'm sure you won't mind!  Good luck, and hope you find someone you're comfortable with.

As an aside, I found this thread very funny:

I see a private dentist (albeit a British one) and have Denplan dental insurance which I pay for monthly. It's not really that expensive.

Ah, I wish UKY didn't make us all have to be so careful about offending! That's much funnier than anything we've had here on a long time!  ;D

I agree with Chary here. I think that dentist quality varies in both the UK and the US. If you haven't given it a chance, I think you should. I've had good dentists in the US and bad ones. I've only had one dentist in the UK and he's been good and really nice as well.  :)

My NHS dentist who happens to be female, is every bit as good a dentist as the dentist I had in the US - except that my US dentist looked like he could have been a male underwear model (he was ridiculously handsome & fit), charged the bomb & accordingly made enough money to attend every major tennis tournament held anywhere in the world.

The practice I go to is -- I don't know if this is the right term -- a 'split' practice, in that they do both NHS & private dentistry. So if I need any reparative work doing (a filling, crown, etc), I have the choice of getting the NHS standard or 'going private' - so for instance, I have opted for a white filling and a white crown previously rather than the standard NHS metal materials. Also, you can pay privately to see a hygienist for a more involved cleaning & scaling than what you might receive during the standard NHS appointment.

I'm quite happy with my dentist & the practice is spotlessly clean etc - you couldn't fault it.

Perhaps, rubydamselfly, you could find a similar practice?  Don't be afraid.  :)

Sounds like my old US dentist! He was a buddy of George Clooney's and looked the part. And obviously could afford the lifestyle.

I am scared because of what I have read and because of the teeth I see in my area.  They are really horrible and I don't know why!  It is like they have never been cleaned or only the front teeth have been cleaned.  I see bad teeth everywhere; at work, in public and at the gym.

There are no NHS dentists in my area that have openings so I have to go private anyways at least most are part of a dental insurance program or have one of their own.  I have an appointment for an introduction to the practice on Tuesday.

rbb, thanks for the link!  I was looking for something similar.

Chary,  would love to know who your dentist is as I am very close to Cornwall.  You can PM me.  Thanks!

Bad teeth are due to lack of dentistry, not bad dentists mangling people's mouths.
