Found: Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
« on: April 05, 2013, 09:09:37 AM »
Wanted to report that I got a normal sized (none of those tiny packets for me :P) bag of chocolate chips as my local Waitrose. They were on the Jewish endcap in a white bag. The brand is Oneg. The packet says "Kosher for Passover," so there is a possibility that it is a seasonal product. I opened the packet and the chip that I tasted passed muster. Just thought I'd share the love ;)

Good find! I cannot tolerate the mini packets either, they are rather annoying! I was wondering if any stores here sold bigger bags but sadly there is no Waitrose near us...I will have to stop in one next time I am out of town :)

I thought semi-sweet chocolate was just dark chocolate without a lot of sugar (less than 50%, is what my research says). Can't you just use dark chocolate? At least that usually doesn't have all the icky emulsifiers that the chips often have, and which gives them their waxy taste/texture.

I know this is an old thread, but thought I would just note: Costco sells very large bags of semi-sweet chocolate chips that are delicious. I stock up every time I go!

We do have it! Membership's is more restrictive than in the US, and is only open to business owners or members of certain professionals/public sector employees (my husband is a teacher). Getting a membership was one of the first things we did when he got his school ID...

As far as I can tell, it's almost exactly the same as Costco in the US, with a lot of the same items (and the mark-up for import isn't too high). It was thoroughly bizarre to walk into the warehouse and know exactly where everything was because the layout was the same as it was back home.

Hmmm, I don't think we'll qualify then.  Oh well, for only two people Costco is probably not the best idea anyway.... drat.  :(

Any word on Trader Joe's?   ;)

If you get a membership in the US (which anyone can do) you can use it here.  A bonus is that you can renew it online

Even better than Trader Joe's? The M&S foodhall. I miss it dearly (and I'm a TJ regular)!

Does it vary Costco by Costco?  I didn't have to "qualify", I just joined like when I was in the US.  I can't shop between 10am and noon on weekdays is all.

And I haven't ever lived anywhere with a Trader Joe's but I do love M&S Food!  Especially their dine in for 2 for £10!

Find yourself a nice local deli, wholefoods co-op (not Wholefoods the store, but independent run places where everyone is a member and takes part), or a farm shop and you'll have your choice of great -different and fun ingredients!!

Ooooh! Is that 2 full meals for 10 pounds?  That sounds like something to check out.  :D

When a Trader Joe's was built in our town here in California, there was much celebration and dancing in the streets!  Okay, perhaps not literally but we were really excited!   ;)

It's great to know there are other options in the UK to help me get over my TJ's addiction.  I'll be sure to check out your suggestions, thanks phatbeetle!  :)

It's a meal for 2.  Main, side, dessert, and a bottle of wine for £10.   :)
