Mexican Food Ingredients in Edinburgh?
« on: April 11, 2013, 01:45:51 AM »
Hi,

I'm new here, but I think this is the right place to ask this question.  Does anyone know where in Edinburgh I might be able to find some good quality ingredients for Mexican recipes?  I'm hoping to find tortillas that aren't the rubbery ones you can get in the co-op.  Maybe some tortilla chips that aren't just non-flavored Doritos, ooooh, and some Monterey cheese (or some close equivalent).  Some dried chipotle peppers might be too much to hope for, but what about fresh poblanos or even better, some Hatch green chiles.  I'm getting hungry...

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The place you want is Lupe Pintos.

Lupe Pintos or you can definitely get dried chipotles from Mexgrocer.

Monterey Jack I have found in slices and block at Heron Foods bu it doesn't look like they have any near Edinburgh.

I haven't been able to find any tortillas here (around Manchester, at least) that aren't bland and rubbery. I've tried ones from the Co-op, Asda (which were Old El Paso brand, but god-awful) and Tesco, so there could still be some out there, but nowhere near our neighbourhood.

I gave up and learned to make my own. Fortunately, they're pretty easy - if a bit time-consuming, since I'm a dolt with a rolling pin - and crazy cheap, as it's only flour, baking powder, shortening (or oil) and water. Of course, I only make flour tortillas, since I'm not really sure where to find maize products here.

I haven't found any good non-Dorito tortilla chips, either. :(

If you're looking for cornmeal/masa harina for making corn tortillas (or anything else), try local wholefoods stores.  They'll usually label it Polenta, but it's the same thing, in varying degrees of coarseness.

Cool Chili does fresh corn and wheat tortillas, as well as a wide variety of peppers and sauces.

The Tesco Value tortilla chips are regular tortilla chips, not like doritos.

Your guys Mexican sounds way more sophisticated than ours but we make nachos that we love.

Chips:  doritos or Aldi's has a good plain one (can't remember the name)
Beans: Mexican bean mix from Asda; Sainsburys has pinto beans
Guac: avocado mixed with salsa
Fajita veggies
Seriously strong chedder cheese sause:  http://www.seriouslystrongcheddar.co.uk/our-products/seriously-strong-cheese-sauce

This does not taste like anything we had in the US but they are so good that we don't care.  I actually like this cheese sauce more than caso.

When I did live in the UK, I never bothered going to Scotland.  I heard it was much like Detroit!  You simply can't get the same kind of GOOD, authentic Mexican food on that side of the pond.  Bunch of bland rubbish.  My wife used to think it was fantastic, until I brought her back to the states, and got some of the real thing.

What a shame. I've never been to Detroit, but I lived in Scotland and it is an absolutely stunning place with incredible people. I've been to 9 countries in Europe, and many cities within those countries, and Edinburgh is arguably the most beautiful city I've been to.

I've had some awesome food in Detroit.

Scotland is bland for Mexican food (We're not bland in food, we've got amazing curries!!!!!)  or bland in general?    Because, its a real shame you didn't make it to Scotland.  Because its an amazing, friendly, beautiful, lovely, wonderful place and very different to which part you go to!

I've never gotten food on my underpants!

Thirded! Scotland is fabulous! And I've only scratched the surface - so much yet to be seen!  :)

But no Justin Verlander so Scotland is OK in my book.
