Corn Tortillas
« on: October 14, 2004, 05:14:15 PM »
Discovery Foods has a package of corn tortillas available now that's actually made out of corn, unlike the Old El Paso ones which are some sort of wheat mixture. Just FYI

I found them in the local (Belfast) import food shop, which charges far too much on some items, but as it's Discovery I reckon if your local grocery carries some of their stuff you can ask them to carry the tortillas too. I'm going to ask Morrison's by my way to do so.

I made the best Mexican dinner last night, if I say so myself. Refried beans & rice (Uncle Ben's with some fajita powder mix boiled in) and chicken enchiladas, with aforementioned corn tortillas and monterrey jack cheese. It was quite delish.  :)

Stella:

Where did you find the Monterey Jack cheese in Belfast?  I love Tex-mex and miss that cheese when DH and I have our Tex-Mex feast. (often  ;))
Thanks
Rose

Ooh, thanks for the info Stella!  I've been looking for 'pure' corn tortillas for a while, as the other half is trying to avoid eating wheat.  I even tried making them myself, which turned into a disaster!  I'll keep my eye out for them in the shops.

Monterrey Jack is at Morrisons's (formerly Safeway) at the Westwood complex in West Belfast (at the Kennedy Way roundabout). You'll find it at the deli counter.

Also, Sawers, which has the Discovery corn tortillas, has started stocking some of the stuff you could get online at CoolChile.com, so if you need tomatillos or chile ancho sauce or diced green chiles, they've got it.

Thanks for the info Stella. I know where you are talking about.  As far as tomatillo's, do you mean Sawer's has fresh tomatillo's?  Like to make salsa verde'?  Please confirm as I can not imagine canned tomatillo's but just want to make sure I am comparing apples to apples. No pun intended there.  ::)  Thanks again.

Sadly they are not fresh but they are canned and they do make a good salsa verde and other tomatillo recipes (I do a salsa with guajillo and puya chilis with tomatillos & garlic). All of their stuff is a bit dear but since they are the main importers what can you do. Have you never seen canned tomatillos before? I used to get them in CA.

Whereabouts do you live? Look around a bit, you will be able to make some good dishes without breaking the bank from the online shops too. Discovery is good, I use their stuff and Old El Paso stuff as a helper rather than sticking to their suggested uses. Like the rice I made the other day, I just used Discovery's Texan Fajita packet boiled in plain rice, worked a treat. Morrison's/Safeway carries a beef sausage called Mexican chili that is nice for breakfasts. Sainsbury's sometimes has masa harina, too, along with other goodies.

I am in Chelmsford,Essex, about 30 miuntes train journey north of London.  We have somethings, but nothing to exciting.  I can't find montery jack cheese anywhere. I am orginally from Tucson,AZ, so mexican food is a must.
