Setting up apartment viewing appointments?
« on: April 23, 2013, 01:48:45 PM »
This may be a silly question... but how does it work?  Do you set up an appointment with a specific agency to show you all of the properties that match your criteria or do you set up appointments to view specific properties and meet the agent there?

I've found several rentals on rightmove, but am just wondering how I should go about setting up appointments for viewings.

Thanks!

We either a) called a specific real estate office who was advertising a specific property we wanted to see to make an appointment to see it, or b) dropped in to a real estate office in an area in which we wanted to live and asked what they had.

Just call the agent/office listed and make an appointment.  If you wind up not liking the place, you can ask about similar places.

Not silly at all. And the answer to your above questions is "Yes." Think of estate agents like salespeople (which they are). They want to sell you a place to live so they get a commission from the landlords. So if you call up about one specific property, and it is available to view, they'll likely also want to show you as many other properties that fit your requirements on their books. Sometimes they'll drive you around, sometimes meet you there. It all depends on the situation.

Like camoscato said, calling estate agents is the best way to set up the viewings. Don't be disappointed if they are no longer available as is often the case when it comes to rightmove etc. I find just heading to the high street of the area you want to live and walking in to register is the way to go. Let them earn their commission!

Also, be prepared for them to attempt to show you things that do not fit your criteria. They essentially work for the landlords so will try and get you to up your budget by showing you things above the price you say you are looking for so its best to decide what you want in advance, and then be firm about it. Otherwise you may find yourself wasting a lot of time looking at flats that will not meet your needs.

Good luck! :)
