I'm a mustard on my sandwiches kind of gal.

but there are some which require butter instead - a good cheese and pickle sandwich, for instance. Putting mayo on that would be sacrilege!  :P

(and I secretly love salad cream)

This!

You know what's really nice? Salad cream mixed with curry powder.   :)

Salad cream  [smiley=puke.gif] YUCK!
As for margarine on sandwiches, the first time I ever made a sandwich for hubby in the States, I asked him what he wanted on his ham sandwich...mayo or mustard. He said just butter thanks. I was very perplexed. I'll put butter on my bacon and cheese sandwich now, but depending on the sandwich, a bit of english mustard, or some type of chutney or pickle is good for me. Can't remember the last time I put mayo on a sandwich...actually I can't remember the last time I had a sandwich!

No butter or margarine on sandwiches here.  If it is an egg or chicken sandwich then a bit of mayo.  Otherwise mustard.  We aren't a big sandwich eating family.
MrRed5 puts salad cream on his french fries  [smiley=puke.gif]  I prefer a bit of mayo and ketchup.
My dislike of salad cream has lead me to eat salads without any dressing.  On the rare occasion I want something I will use a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Tykeman, you don't put butter on a bacon sarnie?? That makes it extra delicious!  ;D

No - I find that disgusting. Probably because going up we wouldn't do it, there's plenty fat from the bacon and the brown sauce adds moisture.

Some is down to the war I think, seen as extravagent to have both - I have a friend that as a kid I went round and they couldn't have both butter and jam on a sandwich, just jam. Now I do tend to leave out the butter/marge from most sandwiches. For meat it tends to be low fat mayo on one slice of bread/half of roll, and mustard on the other.
Butter just for toast etc.

Mustard is a product of the devil, especially yellow mustard.  [smiley=puke.gif]

I thought that was tapenade, also good on sandwiches!

I like mustards too.

Wow, I never realised the emotion people feel about their sandwiches. I prefer soup any day.  ;D ;D ;D

But lettuce is watery (can get squidgy) too?  :)

You dry it off! Also, mustard is evil. I guess I make and eat my sandwiches right away, or keep them in the fridge, so all this isn't an issue?

See, I never thought it was a war thing. I wasn't weirded out by butter on sandwiches because my grandmother has done that my whole life. I always thought she was funny for doing that until I came here. Her mother is English and emigrated to the US around 1905, so when I came here, I thought she must have learned it from her English mother.

As to margarine, I like my own mother's philosophy.  She once told me "if I'm going to have the fat, I may as well have the good stuff that tastes of something." Somehow that just made sense, and I don't touch margarine now.
