American foods - opinions please?
« on: May 03, 2013, 11:33:07 PM »
Hi there everyone, I am a British national who is absolutely obsessed by America and I love the food from the amazing country. I've considered taking up a new business venture that I would like people to help me with. I'm interested in opening an American supermarket that would sell everything from candy to food stuffs. I have found a wholesaler with a large variety of American foods for me to order and I'm currently looking for a property to house this. Now, I would like to begin taking stock. I am aware of some of the popular items for Brits like the candy but I'm interested in what kind of things US ex-pats are finding hard to source in the UK and would like to be able to buy again? Please comment on this thread. I'd appreciate it loads. :)

From the Americans in the UK that I know, you could probably run an entire shop that just sold ranch dressing!

Honestly, the concept of an entire supermarket devoted to American products sounds sort of like a non-starter to me. Even in parts of the UK with large American populations, I'd tend to think you wouldn't have enough customers to sustain the business. I think this is why there are quite a number of online retailers who specialise in American foods. The overhead of having physical premises makes it an unfeasible venture. Sorry. Just my opinion. I could be totally wrong and I wish you luck!

There are a few American food shops that have physical premises, but I think they tend to be quite small.  I agree with Chary that you'd struggle to find business for a full-size supermarket that sold only American food.  I do like to go to American Fizz in Bournemouth, but I only go once every few months, and the local British people really only buy chocolate and snack foods.

However: I agree with the ranch dressing.  Big bottles of Hidden Valley, please!  Cheetos.  Root beer, Mountain Dew.  American Fizz has Jarritos sodas, and I usually buy a few of those.  Kraft mac and cheese.  Canned pumpkin.  Seasonal things like Peeps.

Maybe the word supermarket wasn't the correct word, rather a shop that specialises in more than just candy. I know that in the area that I'm from that demand is super high.

Hidden Valley Ranch - I prefer the dry mix packets, rather than bottles
corn tortillas
provolone dolce cheese (not the piccante variety you sometimes find here)
Crystal Light drink mix

Apart from the cheese, i can get all these things here, but have to pay ridiculous prices for them.  The cheese, i cannot find anywhere... even in the most well-stocked cheesemongers.

Good luck with your plans.

Cheese grits or just plain grits that I can add cheese to!
Bacon Bits
BBQ Sauce!
Diet Pepsi! (A Must!)
Italian salad dressing! (My fav!)
Yes! Combos! Please!

I thought they already had crackers/saltines there?

They have Italian crackers (can't ever remember the brand name).  They are similar, but IMHO they aren't the same as Zesta's.

Nacho cheese dip
American breakfast sausage! (a necessity for a southern girl's grits, so I've been making my own, but sometimes it would be nice to have some already made)
Kool-aid packets (blegh... but he loves 'em)
Chipotle Chili powder
Dawn dish soap (it's not just for dishes anymore)
Peppermint patties and Mint Three Musketeers bars
And yes, get Combos, but get the cracker/cheese ones, not just the pretzel ones!
