New member - soon to be moving to UK
« on: October 16, 2004, 12:55:46 AM »
Hello Everyone!

I'm moving mid-December to Salisbury, Wiltshire, to be a Navy wife and enjoy England.  We'll be there for eighteen months while he goes to Empire Test Pilot School.  I'm leaving my job and everything else for this adventure, and I'm really looking forward to it.  I've found the whole issue of whether I can get a work permit or not to be very confusing - because his status is so goshdarn unique.  Not even the DoD has clear guidance.  Anyone else here with a Navy spouse, perchance?

It's been great reading through the forums; I've already learned a lot.
Two yanks (not just one!) headed for the UK (Salisbury, Wiltshire) for 15-18 months.  He'll be in test pilot school/exchange program between US Navy and RAF, while I take time off from my civil service job.  We're getting married, soon, here or there - whichever works!

Hi Mauraanne,

Welcome! I'm a Navy wife and live in Portsmouth.  I 'm sorry but I can't answer any of your questions as my husband is in the Royal Navy.  Salisbury is a wonderful city and actually not too far away from me (about an hour and a half).  Good luck with everything!

Maureen

Hi and welcome!  I also do not know much about your work status, but in most overseas assignments the dependents of DoD personnel are allowed to work in the country in which they are stationed.  I honestly do not know what else to tell you other than those that are dealing with your husbands PCS like the Military Pay office should be able to offer some advice.  Usually as well DoD dependents are given priority for on base/post jobs.

I know this is not helping much, but I hope you enjoy the UK and figure this all out!

Thanks, everyone - for the info and the warm welcome!

I'm a civil servant in the Navy, which would give me preference in hiring - if there were Navy jobs there (he's at ETPS with the Royal Air Force as part of an exchange program, so the US Navy isn't 'there' - hence no jobs of that type for me, at least not nearby!).  But that's okay!  I can't say I'd mind being a housewife for 18 months!  Maybe I can volunteer somewhere.  Anyone else do that sort of thing?

Hi Mauraanne,

I've never done any volunteer work here but it is my understanding that in order to volunteer here you have your proper visa sorted.. I seem to remember something like that anyway, someone else on here would almost definitely have the answer for you..  I'm sure you'll have no problem with volunteering anyway.  Besides volunteering there's loads of exploring you can do in and around Salisbury it's so beautiful there.
