Long Island to Glasgow
« on: May 12, 2013, 06:50:14 PM »
Hi All  :)

I'm a 32F from Long Island (Long Beach in Nassau County), and have been living in Glasgow since August.  I'm glad I stumbled across this forum, because I'm feeling a little homesick lately, and would love to meet up with some other Americans.  Anyone live in the Glasgow or Edinburgh area?  I love trying new restaurants, live music, and road trips.  And I miss Mexican food so much! lol
I moved to Glasgow from NYC/Long Island August 2012.  And yes, I miss the pizza.

Hiya and Welcome Kate,

I myself am Mass. born n bred and came here to Scotland in 1999. Was in Aberdeen for a few years and i've been in Fife  between Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy the rest of the time.
The homesickness hits us all from time to time even if you are happy and love it here. So feel free to vent and natter away. Lots of us in both the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas and i'm sure they will speak up too.

Kay

Ahhh right. :)
I was born in Boston, lived in Brookline the first two years of my life then my parents moved out to Medfield where I lived till I graduated High School. Then lived in Medway until I moved here in 99.
Plenty of folks will chime in soon enough.. lol Always nice to meet up with other merricans in the general area.

Hi Kate,

I'm moving to Cornwall not Scotland but your post made me already fear for the loss of great Mexican food. I currently live in Brooklyn and I know I'm going to miss it sooo much when I move over. If you find a good place please let me know, I'd travel to Scotland for it!

If you're missing Mexican food then pop along to Lupe Pintos on Great Western Rd. It's a really decent wee deli and should help you put together a Mexican fix.

Good luck with the move!

I will be moving to Stirling in about a month. I would be more than happy to make you Mexican food! I plan on bringing a whole suitcase full of proper spices as my Mexican husband will not survive for long with out them. We tried a Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh about 10 years ago and were shocked when we were asked after we ordered, "What's a burrito? Is it deep fried?" Needless to say we both looked at each other and said that we "could Never live here!" 10 years later... Hahaha

Heather, eat as much Mexican food as you can now, because you're going to be majorly disappointed :(  The spices they use here just aren't the same.  And forget about guacamole.....they don't know what they're doing!  Good luck on your move to Cornwall.  I've never been down that way, but it looks gorgeous.

Racheeee....you made me laugh when you mentioned Dairy Barn!  Yes, I miss Dairy Barn.  And diners!  Coming from Long Island, I'm sure you can relate :)

Missyp, I love Stirling!  And you are too sweet to offer up homemade Mexican :)  Where are you moving from?

I've been to Lupe Pinto's in Glasgow but just to pick up a few American groceries.....they have good guacamole too.  I'll have to try more of their Mexican stuff.  I keep putting it off because I'm afraid I'll be disappointed!

Nothing easier to make yourself than guac. Depends on how you like yours but I use:  ripe Haas avocados, salt, minced onion, chopped chilies, fresh lime juice. 5 ingredients - easy peasy! Some people like chopped tomato in theirs. Some people like simply avocado, salt & lime.

Lupe Pintos is great - only wish I had one local to me!

I am moving from California. I have already said my emotional goodbyes to the sunshine and beaches. Thankfully it has been over 90F for the past few days, so it makes it easier.

I am the queen of guacamole purism!  ;)
I use ONLY garlic salt in mine, and everyone that tastes it seems to love it.
The problem here is finding avocados ripe enough.  Even the ones that are labelled 'ripe and ready' are still several days away from perfection for me, so i have to plan my guacamole fixes like a week in advance.

Yes the Mexican food is crap here, but it is getting better slowly... Kate, we have at least 3 burrito places in town now (Taco Mazama, Pinto), and their food is really nice, although maybe different from what you're used to.  Another Mex restaurant has opened on the South Side and gets great reviews (i think it's called Nachos?), but we've not been yet.  When you get used to the curries (especially in Yadgar and Karahi Palace), you kind of get over the lack of Mexican... at least, that's what happened to me!)  I live near Lupe Pintos, so generally just get the stuff and make my own.

BTW, I'm from California and have lived in the UK (mainly in Glasgow, but a few other places as well) since 1985... so, Hiya!

Have you tried Lidl? I find their avocados are usually just about perfect!

I find putting things like avocados in a brown paper bag inside a dark cupboard ripens them nicely. Works for mangoes and pears too.  :)

Now I'm craving guac!
