American spouse working in UK
« on: May 31, 2013, 04:20:44 PM »
We are Americans thinking of moving to the UK. My husband would have  a work visa from the company he'd be working for. As his spouse, is it easier for me to get a work visa once we're in the UK? I was told I would qualify for "unskilled work" What does that mean? Does secretarial count as "unskilled" or do I plan on digging ditches? My ability or inability to work will have a big influence on our decision. Thanks!

If your husband is being sponsored for a Tier 2 work visa then you will apply for a Tier 2 dependent visa which gives you the right to work.

That's great! Can I only do "unskilled" and what is meant by that? For example, would a cashier in a shop or a secretary in an office be unskilled?

As a Tier 2 dependant you can work any job someone is willing to hire you for- you aren't limited to any particular "skill" level - Good luck with your move  :)

I concur with phatbeetle.  I don't know who told you that you can only do unskilled work.  Your husband's visa is tied to his job but you can take any job you want.
