« on: June 10, 2013, 03:00:50 AM »
Hi all,
Will I be able to have eyeglasses made in the UK with a prescription from my doctor in the US?

Thanks,

I wouldn't think so, but others may know. Happily, eye exams are quite cheap here and can often be found on special for free.

I think you can but glasses are usually more expensive in the UK. I would get them made in the US if you can.

Yes you can. There are two different ways to write the prescription, but opticians can understand both.

Hi,

Although some prices for various elements to do with eyecare and glasses/lenses etc have come down a little in the UK, the USA remains cheaper often significantly, for the exact same product and therefore I'd suggest you get your glasses made up there in order to save some money.

However, as per above, if you do find yourself needing to have glasses made here, then yes, the prescription should be able to be processed here in the UK

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

If the glasses are for a child, it is cheaper in the UK courtesy of the NHS (it's free) I've been surprised at the range of frame styles as well. But as far as adult glasses, the US is cheaper.

DW got some here on her first visit because they were cheaper here!

What about using a UK prescription whilst visiting the US? Has anyone done that?
Cheers.

Send the prescription off to a lens crafter in China (they're all over the web). They charge about 20-30 for a pair of prescription glasses. Problem solved.

I just had to get new glasses from SpecSavers and it cost me a tad over 200 pounds for lenses and frames for 2 pair (regular and sunglasses both vari-focal)  I paid about $300 for sunglass lenses in my prescription, using an existing set of frames in the US about a year ago.

I got new glasses from Specsavers last year and they cost me £180 in total :).

That was including:

- Eye test (£5)
- Designer frames (£125)
- Extra-thinned lenses (£50... reduced from £120 due to a special offer)
- All the coatings (£0)
- A replacement lens 11 months later (the coating got scratched and the glasses were still under warranty) (£0)

If I hadn't gone with the designer frames and just got regular generic frames, and also hadn't paid more for extra-thinned lenses, the entire pair of glasses plus eye test would have only cost me £90... but I chose to go for the higher-priced option.

The last time I was in Specsavers, they had a 2 for 1 deal! I got two pairs of glasses (one sunglasses, one ordinary), designer frames, coatings, etc. for under £200!

Specsavers 2 for 1 deals are great.  Wearing my funky purple I work with kids frames now but have my take me seriously tortoiseshell ones as well :)  I go for the midrange price wise.

Does the UK NHS not offer free eye test once a year? The IOM does. Unless that is some that they do here that Specsavers has an agreement with the IOM NHS....

I just got my new pair of glasses with them.
