Washington DC to Durham
« on: June 10, 2013, 03:48:30 PM »
hi everybody, I've just discovered this forum and found it incredibly helpful! I'm in Washington DC and moving to Durham this summer. I'm an academic and coming for a job at the university so awaiting my Tier 2 visa. Meanwhile I'm planning a wedding next summer with my fiance (a dual US/UK citizen) - actually 2 weddings, one in the UK and one in the US! I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the moving, trying to understand how UK universities work, and finding a place to live, but very excited about the future! I'm originally from Ohio but have lived all over the US, in DC for the past 10 years off and on. Thanks for this forum!

Welcome-

We lived in Durham for 3 years awhile back.  Now we are in Manchester.  Also on Tier 2 and DH was working at the university (physics)  Its a really nice town and sure you'll enjoy it.  We're still in contact with a few friends from there.

Welcome, jdl82!  I moved to the UK from D.C. last year to be with my now-husband.  We also had two weddings (UK wedding, U.S. marriage blessing), so I may be able to relate to your experience.  It felt doubly overwhelming at times (if there is such a thing...), but we would definitely do it all again.  We're celebrating both anniversaries this year.  :)

Here's hoping your visa comes through quickly and that life here treats you well.

Oooh hello!! I moved to the NW London area in 2010, but I just recently (last month) moved up to Durham!! I'm from Florida originally. If you ever want to meet up just drop me a line, I don't have any friends in the area and anyway, I love meeting up with Americans!

There's a whole group of us in the Durham area (I think we're up to 30 or so now!).  I'll PM you the link to the Newcastle/Durham Expat group on Facebook. :)

I've just applied for my fiance visa and will be coming to Durham.  I can't find the group on FB for the Newcastle/Durham group?  What is the name of it, please?

Thanks

Hi everyone- my name is Katelyn & I've been living here in the UK for the past 2 years!  Did my master's degree at Teesside and I've been married to my British husband for nearly a year now.  I am sooo desperate to meet up with some Americans!  Can someone message me details from the Facebook group?  Thanks  :)
