Renew American Drivers License???
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:13:37 PM »
hi guys - I have a question please help! I'm an American living in Scotland on ILR, up for dual citizenship this December. My Floridian drivers license expired yesterday and when I went to renew online, it says I have to visit my local DMV. Is it possible to renew my Florida license when I'm a resident in the UK? I'm going home in November and was wanting to drive around.
any help you can give is appreciated!!!

Do you have a UK driving licence?  You'll be able to drive with that.

Every state has different rules for license renewal.  Some allow you to renew an expired license.  Check the Florida DMV website.

No I have a provisional just now, but will be obtaining my license as soon as. I tried renewing via the Florida DMV website but it won't let me and won't give a reason as to why not. It says I have to make an appointment with my lcoal DMV, but that's a bit of a problem seeing as I'm in Scotland ;)

I seem to remember people here mentioning in the past that for some states, you can't renew your licence unless you are actually resident in that state. So, if you're living in the UK, you might not be able to renew your Florida licence without going in person and showing that you are resident in Florida.

Do you think you will be able to pass your UK driving tests and get your UK licence by November? If you can, then you will be able to drive in the US on your UK licence when you go back (and maybe you can see if they will let you renew your US licence while you are there).

Rather than speculate, you'll get answers to your questions if you check the Florida DMV website.

Have you previously renewed your FL license online before? I am from FL also. The rule is that you can only renew it online every other time, so that they get an updated photo.

It appears to me that FL is like VA.....you must be a resident to have a license. Also, you are required to update your address within 10 days of moving. Did you do that when you moved to the UK?

The DMV website says you need to provide 2 proofs of residential address. If you are no longer a FL resident, that's a bit difficult, and you really don't want to give false information.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Ditto but for PA. :( They stopped believing I lived there and told me I needed like ten forms of ID (nevermind that I couldn't have fulfilled that even when I did live there!).

For me, it was the last, final severing of ever living in the US again. I don't really care to anyway, but besides the fact I'm uninsurable for health care over there, I'd have to start from scratch all over again if I ever want to drive there, too. No thanks!!
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London
99-00 - studied at Uni of Sussex on exchange
Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

Makes sense, thanks :) I should be able to pass by November, I already drive I just need to get the whole driving manually down. I think this might be the best option for me as I don't want to provide any misinformation to the DMV.

I've renewed it online before so maybe that was it? I think they won't let me renew due to not actually being physically resident in the state. I really dislike that but I understand it!
By the way, are you contantly being made out to be crazy for giving up Florida for Scotland? I know I sure am :P

I agree with this squirrelly :) Even though I'm still in the US currently (making the transition to move in a couple of months). The US now has a law that starting 2014 if you do not have health insurance you will be penalized during tax season  :o so with that said I'm happy to make the jump across the pond! Among other reasons why my country is going to hell in a hand basket.

Yes I do get that "have you lost your mind?" look, more times than not.  we are going on a temporary 3 year contract, so we get to return to the 100* temps (not sure if im looking forward to that or not) haha
Where in FL are you from?  Cocoa Beach here.  How long have you been in Scotland? You are in the Glasgow area? We will be moving there in about 8 weeks. (Helensburgh)

I renewed my CT driver's license over the phone - it was super duper easy.  I don't even think I had to send anything in...but yeah.  Think it varies from state to state.

Cocoa Beach here.

I met Kelly Slater years ago in Cocoa. Great guy....
