Coursera: Learn Something New - Online Courses - For Free!
« on: June 13, 2013, 06:18:20 PM »
I've seen this posted out on the 'net elsewhere & it looks pretty cool - I may dig into one myself!

Thinking about people who are new to the country & stuck for something to do -- while waiting out the FiancĂ©(e) visa before getting spousal visa, or people who are job searching & would like something to take your mind off the job search for a little while... Or those of us who've been here a long time, old dogs wanting to learn new tricks (like me)!  :)

I present - Coursera:

I know a few folks who have done courses through coursera and have found it immensely rewarding!

What are you going to take Mrs R?
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
Work permit (2007) to British Citizen (2014)
You're stuck with me!

There is a growth of MOOCs and they seem to offer some pretty interesting stuff:

Indian / USA / Australian ones:
https://www.khanacademy.org/
https://www.udacity.com/
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mitx-related-courseware/
https://www.edx.org/
https://www.open2study.com/
UK one:

Great idea, Mrs R. Happy learning, everyone!  :)

Haven't really decided - broad interests, but was looking at Human Physiology a little while ago.  :)

Coursera doesn't really have anything that floats my boat, but some of the links MLG posted look really good! I'd like art history, history of architecture or history of human evolution! All sound fab! I think I'll probably give one of them a go!

If you're talking about the Intro Human Physiology course, I just finished that one up in May!  ;D

I saw someone mention Coursera briefly elsewhere on UKY and man has it been a lifesaver! Didn't think I'd be out of work this long after moving so its nice to have something productive to do with my time. I'm signed up for a couple other classes later in the year, but I'm kind of hoping the guitar one comes along again!  ;D

Thanks for posting this!

I love the idea of Coursera (best MOOC I've tried so far - wanted to love MIT's version but it's particularly awful), but I've tried to do Human Computer Interaction twice now.  Not sure it's the same for every course, but that one takes a MASSIVE amount of time and discipline.  I can keep it up for a couple weeks, but I didn't finish in either session.  Third time's a charm, maybe?

I've recently started the Intro to Psychology class on Udacity. So far it's pretty good, though I've only just got through part 1 as my work schedule is taking over.

Interestingly, at least on Udacity, you can pay a fee and get college credit for some of the courses.

I just listed to a segment on Radio4 about the MIT one! Sounds wonderful! And enormously successful/popular. What didn't you like about it, UpFrom100?

I haven't looked into it very far as of yet, but it looks like Coursera has a few that offer college credits & they are trying to get more like that.

In any case, I'm glad there are a variety of alternative options out there what with MLG's links & Udacity etc - hopefully something for everyone!  :)

Do you have an iPlayer link, Chary?  :-* I'd fancy a listen.

Cool! Good to have the recommendation! I was looking at one about the physiology of the your inner athlete (or something like that) in which I have an interest & it said the prereq was the Intro Human Physiology course - which that's fine, I'm cool with that. But I might do something else entirely - like I said, very broad interests!  :)

It was on the morning 6am-9am programme: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b02qt7vf

I was up early baking a cake, so I'm not sure exactly what time it was I heard it - but I'm guessing between 7 and 8?

It was the bit about the TED Global Conference in Edinburgh.
