Putting in notice while on holiday?
« on: June 17, 2013, 09:40:24 PM »
This is hypothetical at the moment, but I had my first interview with a company on Friday. Today I get the call that they want me for a second interview ASAP, because I'm going in holiday this Thursday. So I have my second interview tomorrow (Tuesday) and since I'm feeling quite confident, I'm wondering what to do if I'm offered the job whilst I'm on holiday.

I hate my current place of work, but wouldn't particularly want to piss them off too much. Is it okay to give my leaving notice whilst I'm away, or do I need to wait until I come back? I know this other company will want me to start as soon as possible but am not sure if there's some general rule I should follow?

Would be interested to hear what anyone thinks!

I'm on holiday just over a week. From 20th June, coming back to work on the 2nd July.

Don't do it, it will make you look bad. Just wait until you get back. Your new employer will understand. It's not worth risking a good reference.

Yeah, I'd say wait if you can.    Hopefully your notice period isn't too long and a week's not too much time out.

I have to agree with racheee and pb.  I always thought it was a bit cheeky when people put notice in just before or while on holiday.

Right, thanks everyone. I've been told I will hear back on the job by Friday at the latest, so if it's offered to me I'll let them know that I will put in my notice once I get back from holiday. Still a bit cheeky if I'm doing it on the first day I'm back, but at least they'll get a full month out of me then. Fingers crossed - I'm down to the final 4 people and there are 2 vacancies. There were originally 340 applicants, so I'm rather sh#tting myself over that one!

Congratulations on making it to the top 4!  Hope you nailed it at the second interview today.  In the meantime, I'll be sending good vibes your way!!

By being considerate to your current employer, you give the prospective employer the message that you will be considerate to them. That's a really positive message which may tip the balance in your favor.

Good luck!!

Thanks, this is a very good point! I definitely want to make the best impression possible starting off.

And thanks all for the luck, everyone. I should find out tomorrow or Friday if I have the job and will let you all know.

I didn't get the job. Great news to find out on the first day of my holiday.   :(

My job has been really making me hate my life in the UK, so knowing I have to go back now without anything else lined up is just going to make it all the worse leaving the US this time. Anyway, I'm grumpy. Hopefully my optimism will come back in a few days - I was just so certain this one was going to work out. :-\\\\

That stinks, Elle.  [smiley=hug.gif]

Maybe you can use the time to continue with proactive strategies to look for another role, and things outside of work, like volunteering, exercise and so on? Actually, go and have fun, if you can, and recharge your batteries as best you can while you're away from all of it.  :)
