burning/stinging/stabbing legs
« on: June 21, 2013, 05:32:23 PM »
In addition to having a broken arm, I've also got some other weird thing going on... just wondering if any of you have ever had this, and how did it end up being resolved?

My outer thighs, from hip to knee are constantly burning and stinging, with varying intensity, 24 hours a day.  The stinging is like being stung by bees/wasps, and it also feels sunburned... but there is nothing there visually.  Then in addition to this, I get this intermittent stabbing pain... very intense, gasping for breath type of pain.  I get this stabbing sensation maybe 10-20 times a day... usually when i'm asleep in bed.

Any ideas?  This has only started about 5 days after i broke my arm, so i imagine it's some kind of trapped nerve thing.  If you've had this before, how did you fix it?

My GP has given me a supposed 'nerve pain blocker', which isn't working in the slightest.  Googling seems to indicate that anti-inflammatories are in order, but i  can't tske them while my broken humerus is mending.

Does sound like a trapped nerve type of thing- but hard to say for sure and definitely not good to speculate over the internet, because although I am not a doctor in real life, I play one on the internet  ;).  Only thing I could say is to try and go back to the GP and explain the nerve block isn't helping and try and get some other help.  Hope you feel better soon :-*

Spoke to the GP on the phone today, and she's recommended me increasing the dose of my tablets, which i will do.
Guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this painful weirdness.

I've never had a trapped nerve. Is this something that will eventually go away or will you just be treating the symptoms for the rest of your life? I'm sorry you're in so much pain. It sounds horrible.  :(

Sorry you're hurting.
If I were you, I'd be asking for a referral to physiotherapy and also for one to an orthopaedic consultant, preferably both spine specialists.

How about massage for general relaxation and stress reduction while you are waiting to get more GP advice and appropriate referrals for investigation?

Sorry you're feeling so rubbish. Get better soon.

No one else has experienced this sort of thing?  I must TRULY be a freak!  ;D

Taking the higher dose of the medication is helping a wee bit.  It's taken the edge off, even if it hasn't killed the pain, so it's at least bearable.

My orthopaedic consultant thinks that when my arm is healed and i've got the brace off and am walking/sitting/lying/standing more naturally, this nerve thing should taper off.

I hope so!

I have experienced this, and still do to some degree.

It is a VERY long story that I will try to sum up quickly.

I was in a very serious car accident several years ago and was partially confined to bed for nearly a year. Among other broken bones, my (sandaled) feet smashed up into the floorboard of the car.

For 5 years after that I had an extreme amount of stress in my life, and not only because of my injuries.

At first I had bad pains in my toes, restless leg syndrome, burning, stinging in my legs and feet, etc. This started a few months after the accident. Then it was like someone was stabbing me in the toes, feet and legs with a knife, and I very often cried out or gasped loudly with the pain. It was always more intense at night. This went on for years and I started keeping a diary of foods I had eaten, caffeine intake, activity level during the day, and my mood that day. It always seemed to come back to stress/anxiousness.  I couldn't sleep at night, which make me more cranky, irritable and stressed the next day. Then my feet/legs would act up even more then next night.  It was a very vicious cycle.

Six years later I still have it, but much, much less. I do have nerve damage from the accident. I did the nerve blocker thing, and  both prescription and OTC painkillers, hot and cold massage, etc. Coincidence or not, the pain lessened considerably when the stress in life was greatly reduced.

For me, the only way to control it was to give up caffeine, try to keep calm and stress-free, and to elevate my legs for at least an hour before bed. I still have trouble sleeping and sometimes it can go on for a couple weeks at a time, then I am fine again.

I hope that you are more fortunate and that when your brace is off and you're operating more naturally that it will wear off.

My FiL was suffering from a trapped nerve in March/April/May. His was so bad that he couldn't work or sleep in a bed and the medication they gave him to manage the pain didn't help. Sorry that I don't have better information, but you're definitely not a freak.

I hope you feel better soon!

While I agree with the Sudocrem statement, this isn't a skin thing.

Albatross - how's it going? Any better/relief?
