New Passport with Married Name (How does it affect visa?)
« on: June 25, 2013, 06:05:38 PM »
I'd like to change my passport to my married name eventually. How does this affect your visa?

I am currently on FLR and will be applying for ILR in 2014. My US passport doesn't expire for a while, and there is no immediate reason I need to change it. I would just like to eventually get everything in the US onto my married name, as everything in the UK (bank accounts, drivers license, etc) is under my married name.

Do you have a BRP or sticker in your passport?

My passport here was stamped on the Isle of Man. When I had my newest passport changed into my married name in 2007 they put a new stamp in it for me. But told me that next time they would have to charge me £££ amount to stamp my new passport OR just travel with the old passport and the new one to show I had ILR.

It would be easier for you to change your US passport with your new name , when you get your ILR visa they will go by the name that is in your current passport. Otherwise  the name on your visa that is stuck in your passport and the name on your passport will not match. It is a nuisance , but best ,I think, in the long run. Also my visa wasn't due to expire for 5 years, but when I changed my name in my USA passport it was the whole 10 years again...

Another consideration is... your flight tickets have to match the name in your passport and its not nice to have to use your old name when you are traveling with your husband on holiday lol
