Independence Day fireworks in London?
« on: July 03, 2013, 01:55:22 PM »
Hi All!
Well, this is just a shot in the dark but thought I would ask if anyone knows about any 4th of July celebrations in/around London? Yes, I know we are in Britain and there might be grudges held and all  ;D  But perhaps there is a group of expats doing something?
It's been 3 years since we've been to a 4th celebration so this time of year always makes me homesick. A google search not me nowhere.

Thanks everyone!

I'm not sure of big organised events, but I've heard if you order at bars/pubs, many will give Americans free drinks?  Not sure if that's true, but if you drink, it's worth a shot (or two!).  :)

I'm wondering this too.  The London Expat American Meetup Group is doing something, but I'm not sure I want to go.  The organiser is kind of weird...apparently he sets up some of the meetups so he can make a profit.  This one is free (I think), but not necessarily sure I agree with some of his other (possible) tactics.  Then again, I've never met the guy so who knows?  The event is there, in any case.  They don't tell where it is until the day, for fear of others "breaking up the group" (??).

There's something else happening at the Benjamin Franklin House, but looks like it's sold out.  And the Democrats Abroad had their annual Independence Day picnic last Sunday (boo).

I'm sure you can go to like, Bodean's or Blues Kitchen in Camden and get all American...think most of the American themed restaurants and bars are doing something or other.  Not ideal though.

Crazy that it seems this is the only thing going on!

Thanks for posting that UpFrom. I had RSVP'd to that event and then changed my mind as it didn't seem to be going anywhere organisation-wise. They must have updated the page in the last 24 hours. If it's not a terrible location, maybe I will wander over. :)

Happy Independence Day everybody!
Thanks for the updates and I think a meetup (with a legit purpose) is a great idea!

Also looking for something family friendly, I have a 6 year old and a 10 month old. Pub time is ok but only limited as the baby will start flipping out after a little while :)

I think the American Expat meetup is kid friendly - says so on the info page :)

I'm going to be on a train to Devon - otherwise I'd be doing something festive too!  but a weekend at the beach with weather that is supposed to be gorgeous (knock on wood!), ain't too shabby either - not complaining!  ;D

I can't imagine Americans being given free drinks on Independence Day as the vast majority of people in the UK wouldn't recognize the significance of July 4th.

My (dual citizen) husband works in an office with a lot of Americans and we're having a summer barbecue to celebrate.

It seems to have morphed into a fireworks only event. In the comments though, there seem to be people talking about a place called Jetlag doing something all day?

Lambeth Bridge is a bit too far away from me to justify going for a 22:45 start time but if you're going, have a blast!  :)

I don't drink, so I'm not sure- it's just a rumor I'd heard from Americans travelling through the UK, so it's very possible it could be just that- a rumor.  :P

I can't understand why people are expecting something happening/disappointed there's nothing.
