I had been chatting online with DH (back then, a cool online pen pal) for about 5 years before we met in person.  I flew to the UK to meet him, and we met at the local train station where he lived.  He gave me a ride to the hotel, though we agreed that if either of us wasn't comfortable sharing a car yet, I would call a taxi.  I stayed at the hotel during my holiday, but he stayed with me the last night after we had a lot of in-person time together.

I came to visit him first, sort of. I had already booked a Red Dwarf convention in his hometown. He met me at Heathrow but I stayed in a hotel.

I went to him first. But I was studying in London at the time (a plan that was already in place before we met online 4 months earlier).  I only had the 2 hour train to Cardiff to get to him. I stayed at his place and shared a bed. Seems nuts, I know. But he had housemates and I felt genuinely safe. So I think it's just up to how secure you feel about it.

We had been talking via internet and telephone for over a year and I visited him first.

He picked me up at Heathrow, we drove to his house, stayed there for a couple of nights and then went to Scotland for three days. Stayed in a B&B there and then back to his house. At some point while we were in Scotland he asked me to change my plane ticket and stay another week instead of the one week I had planned. Everything just felt right so I did.

When I got back home I called him to tell him I made it safely and he asked me how soon I could come back. He wanted me to come back for another two weeks. I booked a ticket that night.

We met in person, but only for a few hours. We stayed in touch via the internet and IM and it was almost 2 years before we saw each other again. I went to the UK to see him. I paid for my flight and he paid for the accommodation and we stayed together. We’re married and live together now, so I guess that makes it a non-creepy success story. I felt comfortable with it though and that’s the most important thing. You have to do what you feel comfortable with. :)

I just wanted to post this question for those of you who met online. First off, for the gals, did you go see him first or did he come see you first? And when you did meet, did you or he stay in a hotel or did you host the other person in your home?  Just figuring out the bits as my friend will be coming to visit in October and have not yet ironed out if he will stay at my place or a hotel.

Well, it's down to how you feel.

I visited to the States first, booked a hotel the first night but she stayed the night and then I stayed at hers (well, she was staying with her father, he was confined to downstairs).

LOVE reading everyone's story and appreciate all the info. I think we might book a hotel room for him for the first night and then go from there. Regardless of what has happened online, I know it all can change instantly both good or bad. I feel a heavy responsibility to make sure his visit is enjoyable. I don't exactly live in the city that people would come to visit if coming to the US. Just crossing my fingers that everything runs smoothly. :)

We had been chatting on-line for hours pretty much every day for almost a year. I flew to London first. It didn't feel like such a huge deal because I had already been there alone a few times so it wasn't like unfamiliar surroundings for me or anything. I paid for the hotel room. He was living with his parents at the time so it made more sense. That way if things went wrong he could just go back to his parents' place and I still had a place to stay. But things went very well and we had a very lovely 2 weeks together. We were completely sure we wanted to be together forever after that.

Although i flew into Philadelphia, DW lived over in Southern NJ and that wasn't much of a tourist area! We had chatted for a few months and at length both online and on the phone so we felt a connection. We both agreed that we could at least be friends when i was there, there was a spare room in the house. But DW told me later she was 90% certain it was right and just needed to meet to confirm it...given we've just passed her 5 year anniversary of moving to the UK I guess she was right!

For our first face to face meeting, she was workinging til 8pm, I got to the hotel about 3pm and used the pool. Then a quick pint in the bar at happy hour (I could easily have stayed there but thought better of that!), she asked me to leave a key card at the hotel desk and I was to go to the bar by 8pm, then she would come to hotel and get changed before coming to the bar. And I was under strict instructions to sit at the bar facing away from the door so I didn't see her until she came up behind me and asked if I'd buy her a drink!
