Suggestions for neighborhoods in Edinburgh

Thanks to a rather fortuitous job offer, my OH (a BC) and I will be returning back to the UK, specifically Edinburgh. Can anyone make some suggestions about areas for us to look at for flats? Our budget is less than 700GBP (preferably closer to 600), and would ideally like a 2bd, but would settle for a 1bd.

We were looking at Leith, for the proximity to the Forth, but are open to areas closer in to the city centre as that's where he will be working.

Whereabouts in the city centre? Depending on which part he'll be in, certain areas are more convenient than others for bus routes and things.

He'll be working an easy 5minute walk from Waverly Station.

Leith is a pretty good bet then, just choose carefully as some bits are still well dodgy. It's pretty obvious when you're looking at flats which areas are ok. A little further west and nicer but more expensive is Trinity, and further west again but more central is Comely Bank, which I really like. Right next to the wonderful Stockbridge but much cheaper. South side you have Newington, which is quite studenty, or Bruntsfield which can be pricey but is a fantastic area. Avoid places like Dalry, Pilton, Granton, Gracemount. Have you looked on Zoopla? I find that's a great site for finding flats!
