Does US citizenship for my baby mean taxes??
« on: July 22, 2013, 12:49:45 PM »
I'm confused. I know as a US citizen if I work and earn over a certain amount here in the UK I have to pay taxes to the US but I was wondering if I get my baby dual UK/US citizenship will he have to pay taxes to the US later in life?? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I wasn't sure. Would it be better for him to just be a british citizen with a british passport only?

When your child is born, he will be a US citizen, it's not really something you get him. Taxation, etc will apply to him.

He'll have to file a US tax return reporting his income, but depending on how much money he makes, he may or may not owe any taxes to the US.

Yep, you don't have a choice as to whether or not he is a US citizen. He will be one, regardless of whether you get him a passport.

Ok thanks guys. Can I take my baby to the US with just a UK passport?? I think I remember reading somewhere that my baby would have to enter the US with a US passport. Would anyone be able to post a link to show that is the case? My husband is doubting it.

You need to have a US passport for your baby.

Most U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States.
