Career advisor recommendation, West Mids
« on: July 30, 2013, 09:03:08 PM »
Hi. Can anyone recommend a career advisor in the Hereford-Shrewsbury-Kidderminster area (we're in Ludlow)? My husband is fed up with his job and wants to try something new, but he's not sure what or how to start finding out what. Alternatively, can anyone suggest books, websites or organisations that might be of use?

Thanks! Stacy

Hi! I live in Shropshire too and just went through the entire job process. I know he is fed up with what he is doing but does he have any inkling of what he might be interested in?

I registered with a few recruiting agencies - HAYS seemed to have a big network. I registered with the one in Telford and told them the other areas I would be willing to work in.  They make you come in and sit down and talk about what you might be looking for and they come up with some suggestions as well.  They don't get paid unless they find you a job.

That being said, I did find my current position on my own for £6,000 more per year than HAYS recommended me to start at (I am still earning 1/2 of my previous salary now).

Is your husband American or British? I felt like the hardest part here was getting my foot in the door even though I was very successful in my career at home. I had an offer from every interview I went to it was just getting to the interview that was tough.

I would also recommend job fairs and maybe doing some volunteer work to get a feel for different industries. I found career by volunteering with the company and realized I loved it. Sometimes just spending some time working and talking with people in different areas can really make a difference! I will keep my eyes and ears open for anything around here!

What Color Is Your Parachute? is a good book for beginning a life/work audit:

Thank you for the replies!

Rblondiebelle, my husband is a Brit, so at least he doesn't have visa worries and knows how the system works. Problem is, he doesn't know what he wants to do job-wise, but knows he doesn't want a desk job. So agencies might not be the best match, but then a few temp jobs in the interim might not be a bad idea either. Volunteering also a good thought, will suggest he explore that one.

Sonofasailor, the only thing I know about that book is that a former friend/roommate read it partway through and threw it at the wall in frustration; or disgust, I was never sure. Will explore it a bit more.

It can be a bit sort of self-help sounding, Tony Robbinsish, How to Win Friends-like. But you know if you are just trying to get something started, get some inertia going.....

I can completely relate to not wanting to be stuck behind a desk. I was on my feet in the middle east for the past two years so I was not too thrilled about being in an office.  Luckily I found something that I can get out of the office and into the community but still not as active as I would like. Maybe he could look at some sports teams to work for? He may be in the office but atleast its different and interesting or youth organisations? I think volunteering is a good way to get a feel for things without having to fully commit. I can imagine he's pretty frustrated not knowing so i will keep my fingers crossed!
