How long does it take for a mailed in application?

Hi, I'm sure this has been covered before but I haven't seen it just flipping through the topics.  I'm planning on mailing in my visa application, but I could go to Chicago and apply in person if absolutely necessary.  I guess I'm wondering how long it's taken for you who sent it to get it back?  I'll need to think about getting it in soon since I would like to move over end of January (if every thing goes as planned).  Thanks!

If it's a fiancee visa, I hand delivered mine to the consulate and it was returned by post within a week.

Mine took about two weeks, but that was only because they had to ask me for one more bit of information before sending it back. 

Don't apply for your visa too early.  You have six months *from the date it is issued* to get married, not from the date you enter the UK.

I sent mine by mail to NYC office. Mine took 10 days...I was selected somehow (I think randomly) for a phone interview or I think it would have been even quicker. Yes remember the 6 months bit...you can ask for it to be post-dated but in all my double checking I forgot to! It worked okay..but didnt give me much turn around time after the wedding to do the next process.

Oh good it doesn't take very long!  Thanks ladies!  Yeah the six months thing is something to keep in mind.  We're getting married February 18th, so....I think it'll be sent out next month some time, so I would have 3 months left of the visa after I get married.  It would probably be ok to send it in November then I think or do you think it would that be too early to send it out? Thanks!

I think doing it before Christmas is best as you know there'll be a ton of fiancee/spousal applications after all of the Christmas proposals!
