Michigan to Coventry
« on: August 08, 2013, 05:01:28 PM »
Hi all!
I am so happy to have found this website- wish I found it months ago! My (English) husband and I met three and a half years ago, and married in December. I spent the summer with him in Coventry while we looked for a home and prepared our immigration application with a solicitor, and I just returned to MI yesterday to officially send out my application. I am hoping to be living out there by October!
I had been to England on holiday two times before my summer out there and loved it... but I found living out there really difficult at first. I always prided myself on my independence, and having to give up my car, my job, and all of my own friends to be out there really left me lost. Not to mention that my stress reliever is usually cooking, which I had NO idea how to do in England! (grams??? scales???). It took me a month or two to really settle in, and I was actually very sad to leave when it came time...
Are there any Americans living in the Coventry area? Any advice on places to go to find American goods? (besides the very over priced "American Store").
LeAnne

Hi welcome to the site   My hubby is English and I've lived here in the UK for 11 years. I am originally from Toledo in NW Ohio and have family in wood haven   We always fly to Detroit when heading back to the states.  I think it will take u awhile to settle. What helped me was getting a dog cuz it got me out of the house. Learning to drive and working. All the best !!
My home for 18 years since June 2002. Became a citizen 2006

Hi LeAnne!

There are indeed Americans in Cov.  At least two that I know of - myself and another woman called Pebbles who used to post here. Whereabouts are you going to be living?

In addition to the American Store, I have found various US foods at: Tesco Arena, Sainsbury's Courthouse Green, ALDI, LIDL, TK Maxx (Central Six and Gallagher Retail Park), and Morrison's by the B&Q in Binley.

We were living in Binley by Morrison's, but recently started renting a home in the new estates in Holbrooks. Thanks for the advice on the stores! I never even thought about trying ALDI or LIDL, and I just heard that Tesco stores are starting to carry more and more American products.

Yeah, I was just at Tesco Arena yesterday and saw 3 types of oreos, two flavours of Finz/Goldfish and Sam Adams and Blue Moon beers.

Let me know when you are back in Coventry and we can arrange a meetup.

Hi LeAnne! I'm from Michigan, now living in Leicester (about 40 mins from Coventry) with my English hubby. I've been here for 4 years now and I've only recently fully embraced it and love it. Sometimes it takes time, but this place definitely worms its way into your heart ;)

Hi Leanne! It's been awhile since I've been to this site, but I saw your post, and had to reply. I'm from Ca, and have been in England for 11 years now. I'm in Meriden, which is considered part of Coventry. Just next door to you! I bet you're looking forward to coming back, you've missed a great summer. It's gorgeous out right now. Let me know when you get back, we should hook up sometime! I've gotten used to the whole American vs English thing, when it comes to cooking and loads of other things. Figured it out really, I even make a version of homemade hamburger helper! Cause I miss my comfort 'back home' foods, ha. Anyway, look forward to hearing about all your new adventures.
