For those of you without a tumble drier...
« on: August 10, 2013, 02:43:24 AM »
Ok, so I remember from my last stint in the UK, one of the domestic chores that really drove me up the wall was doing the laundry because we didn't have a drier. I absolutely hated having our clothes laying around for days waiting for them to dry. We were in a flat with no outdoor space, and it looks like the same is going to be true for the foreseeable future once we move over.

I've found a couple of airers that I think will help me with this (and hopefully alleviate my frustrations), but I have one last conundrum to figure out. If you don't have a drier, how do you dry your sheets and duvet covers, esp with no outdoor space? Do you just drag all your stuff to the nearest laundromat? Any ideas on how you handle this is very appreciated because I don't want my frustrations with these domestic chores to tick me off to the point I just want to leave again!

Fold them over a couple of times until they're the width of the airer, and drape them over the top. Provided you've got a reasonable amount of air space between all the items (critical), it'd be pretty rare for anything to take much more than 24 hours or so to dry. It's usually thick things like jeans which take longest, sheets are pretty quick.

Most airers will just about fit one load of laundry on them, but if you spread it over two it should dry much faster.

I've also seen heated airers in Lakeland.  Not sure how well these actually work (don't have one myself), but perhaps something to research?

For sheets and duvet covers, I just drape them over the top of the airer as already described, or hang them along the length of the stair bannister - they are usually dry within 24 hours.

I have this style airer and I think it's great for sheets and duvets.

Curtain rods are a great backup if the airer is in use.

We have a dryer but DW prefers to put duvet and sheets on the line

I use these drying racks from IKEA, http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70243241/ you can spread a superking size duvet cover over one, put it near the radiator and have it dry in no time. I put the racks outside when the weather is good as we don't have a washing line. No problems getting clothes, towels, bedding dry.

I bring out the dining chairs and drape the sheets over those, essentially make a fort in the middle of the room. I also like to keep a dehumidifier running while the laundry is drying. Placing anything over radiators will dry them quickly but result in moisture in the air - so if you have any problems with mould in your flat just be wary of that!

I have one of these and it's amazing. Big, sturdy and adjustable. Worth every penny.

We have one and it's amazing. It can fit close to two loads of laundry (depending on what you wash), and it dries things in about half a day (when turned on - we've just been using it as a regular airer in the summer). It also folds up for easy storage.

I've got a 'Dri Buddi', but am not overly thrilled with it.

It does dry the clothes, but takes longer than I'd like.

I hang sheets and duvet cover on the edge of a door to dry.

Sheets dry fairly quickly. Duvet covers take longer, and sometimes need to be turned.

We used this one

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8501075.htm

It has a small footprint and is easy to collapse and move in and out.  I would drape the duvet cover over the top and put it near a radiator.  This clothes dryer holds a ton!

I liked it so much, I brought a few to Canada with me when we moved.  Still use them here!!

I have a related question: does no one actually wash their duvets?  We have severe dust mite allergies [we aren't moving over for two more years], and have synthetic down duvets that we wash EVERY WEEK [two weeks if we're feeling lazy, but that usually ends up badly] or we can't breathe.  Has anyone had issues with washing these? How long will they take to dry?  We use a line, but we live in the deep south and the heat dries everything super fast.
Thanks
